Not trying to be an idiot here, but let's try this..

a) I assert that it's not "the load" that is accurate, but a particular projectile, with a specific spin rate and specific velocity.  Yes, there's more, but Law of DIminishing Returns here...

If this assertion is true, then this leads to the following:
"Does somebody have an *accurate velocity* for the 9mm 147 grain hollow points?"

No, I don't need a powder charge, because I am not using 9mm brass to fire these.  I will have to pick a powder that works in this oddball caliber, such that with the seating of the projectile, I will get that accurate velocity I am trying to match.

Once this percolates for a while, I can expand my thought process here...

Not an idiotic question at all, but I think the important term you've left out of your formula is "in a particular barrel,"  and there's nothing for that but testing, I'm afraid, unless you know somebody who has already done the work in a similar barrel, to get you in the ballpark.

My first bullseye coach told me, "Never stop testing."  He was right.  I have a love/hate relationship with load testing, because it's so time-consuming, but when you get it right it sure is sweet.

I saw an article several years ago where a fellow (don' remember who) did a barrel test in which he built a big holder from a big block of steel.  He test fired all kinds of .45 pistol barrels from old GI barrels to modern match barrels. His test showed that that they all were about the same group size, the end difference is how the barrel is fitted to the pistol.

Hi Jack good to see you comment.  I believe that was Ed Masaki, Built a table then used a 1903 bolt to fire it.  As an aside to the story, the ATF wanted him to serialize the table because technically it was a firearm.  It was just a tester.  He used it to verify the barrel would shoot under 3" before he started working on it fitting it to a slide and frame.  He built me a ball gun from a mil-spec Springfield.  Badge number 1443 thank you Ed.  It started shooting poorly and one of the last years he came to Perry I asked him about it.  Took it home with him and verified in fact the barrel wasn't grouping well.  Needed a new barrel fit.

So yes and no to your question.  Some 1911 barrels stock from the box will group well, just need properly fitted.  He did it to save his gunsmithing time.  Wanted to verify the barrel would shoot before he had a bunch of labor into it.  Also said that some "custom" barrels would not group well.  Good to find that out, prior to spending time fitting.
