Greetings BTRT. We've decided to take things into our own hands in the interim while all the discussion is going on relating to proposals and red tape. Here is where we can possibly check out some of these listings for bicycles which are obviously stolen or at least which look suspicious. Is it possible for us to form a team of interested cyclists who can take additional initiative to randomly check into some of these adds which appear to not be on the level?

Even though this bike may not belong to any one of us, it might be in our collective interest to check into some of these adds.

S&S

And yet another very obvious CL add selling possibly stolen bicycles.

Good idea. I might be able to help out with some of these. A good question to ask is about the serial number - particularly pictures of it. If the seller gets squirrely about it or it’s been scratched off, that’s a good indication that the bike may be stolen.

Other notes:
- Seller can’t tell you anything about the bike
- Vague story about how they got it
- Trying to sell quickly/very desperate to sell to you after contact
- Price extremely low
- Painted over, parts that aren’t normally found on a particular bike style (frankenbikes are fairly common though, so maybe not a huge red flag)

Are there any other questions to ask or details to look for?

REWARD!! To my Oahu friends! If anyone see's this grey pure fix single track bike with white rims please call the police and me! The tag number is W 67018 and the police report number is 14-295315. I know it's a long shot but I'm desperate to get her back home! Sending positive and righteous vibes on her return! Aloha and Mahalo!

It's a very distinct bike, not many like it rolling around here. Look for the white rims, even if they paint it, you will notice the rims. Again there is a reward and no questions asked!

Hi Val

Yes, I think those questions are very relevant...esp the "Price extremely low".

For example this one just isn't right...

>>>***~~~WOW ONLY $75 Trek 1000 USA Oylimpic Racing Road Bike $75 - $75 (Honolulu)

image 1

  • prohibited items
  • product recalls
  • avoiding scams
  • Up for sale is a rare Trek 1000 USA Road bike is for the speed demobd n bike enthusiasts. Bike is in perfect condition everything works n ready to ride away. Its yours for only $75 don't delay reply now

As I see them, I'll post them here and mark which ones I've contacted and results. Obviously if we start to see a pattern, it may lead us to one or a few hubs..(pun hot intended..lol) relating to the where's and who's.

Here’s another selling parts. Harder to tell here - usually midrange front derailleurs go for about $20-30 apiece.

A few suspicious ads that went up today:

All manner of assorted bike parts here, nothing specific, no prices. Offering custom builds and ability to locate parts. This one definitely doesn’t smell right.

Handlebar and stem off of what was likely a mountain bike. Toss-up; could be legit.

Three bikes for sale for cheap, looks like there are some mismatched parts on at least one of the bikes.

Looks like this ad went up today, nice somewhat older Cannondale that’s been partially stripped down and still asking a fair amount (probably above blue book). There are a few red flags on this, about the only thing not suspicious is the rather high asking price. http://honolulu.craigslist.org/oah/bop/4971749926.html

Val good points. The address in Manoa appears unusual and perhaps the desire for a trade.
One could call and ask if it has been registered?  Maybe suggest about checking with the city registry for confirmation that it is legit.

I think the push from buyers might  be to inquire on registration details on any bike purchase and capability on checking with the "future" online registry from the "city"?

At the MABC meeting , I maybe wrong but it seems apparent that the city and HPD may not be interested in proactive work.  The financial gain from repossessed bikes seems too much to give up.  Sentwali and Soha did really bring a very remarkable light when they asked for the money trail aka "paper-trail" .

Let us trust that much good will come out of your hard work.
