I have been following Brython for a while now, even implementing it on my projects and I think that as people will be actively joining this community why not have a discord channel like most other open source projects.

It is easy to maintain
Perfect community forum for reporting errors or issues.
One stop to announce new features or updates and git pulls and requests.

If you agree I would be happy to setup one for the community.

Hi,

Thanks for offering this possibility.

Also, some sites could be blocked in some countries, companies (proxies),..., and for some people it would be more difficult to follow the conversation.

I like old plain mail lists. All my activities are centralised at one place.

I'm ~0 to this proposal. I don't like it but I don't want to be the old guy that hates the modern stuff :-P

Hi kiko,

Like a mail list or a google group.

Not really, The reason I suggested this was because the google group looks rather cluttered. I am in a discord group with Pterodactyl and does it not look sweet! Different place for suggestions or issues and help. Simple to moderate and very easy to expand.

I'm not here to promote discord(like they even need it) but I think this is what organized (and informative) looks like..

I've experienced the modernisation of communication in the mobile world and I think it is not worth the effort (slack, discourse, discord, whatsapp, hipchat, gitter, matrix, telegram,...).
I prefer async communications for stuff like this.
Not all the people interested in a project need to know all the details about the project (like in the pterodactyl example).
This can lead to hide the important stuff for some people due to the noise.
If your are involved in too many parties this (the noise) can be frustrating sometimes.

But as I said maybe I'm wrong so I'm neutral to this proposal. Let's see what the rest of the people wish :-)

I would not follow it.

The right place for this is https://github.com/brython-dev/brython/issues.  When code is committed with a reference to an issue (simply by adding #nb to the commit message) a link is automatically added to the issue. This makes it easy for people to look up what code changes are made to solve (or not) a given issue.

Pierre has indicated many times on this list that this is the proper place to report issues. I can confirm, as someone that writes open source code, that it makes my life much easier when people report issues directly on the github (or similar) site.

One stop to announce new features

New features: of interest to all brython users. An "open" forum (such as google groups) is appropriate.

or updates and git pulls and requests.

pull requests: of interest only to people having commit rights to the github repo.   They does not belong to general forum.

With the current group, I can have follow up sent to inbox whenever I reply to a given message (like this one) and just read about the other discussion using the web interface without clutting my inbox.  Or, I can stop having stuff to my inbox, and simply follow the web discussion. Etc.

If you agree I would be happy to setup one for the community.

Kudos for being willing to step up and potentially help.  However ...

In spite of my indicated preferences, the only people that have any say in this are the core developers (Pierre and others who have commit rights.)  If they see a value in this, then it might be of use. If they don't (because they would not use it), then it would be a complete waste of time and efforts.   Pierre and colleagues volonteer their time freely to improve this project.  The least we can do as users is to use the communication channels they prefer, so as not to increase their burden.

Just my opinion...

In that discussion, someone else mentioned using discourse as an option.  I found that discussion by searching for "discourse" on google groups for Brython. Searchable archives (that contain the entire history) are a wonderful thing ... and they can easily get lost when a new communication channel is created and used.

Please don't. I'm following Brython, and a mailing list is perfect and it
is using well established standards, so I can use the client I want.

I will not install non free software like Discord to follow this project,
so I would loose new of this nice project.

Thanks
Goffi

Yes - please don't.
E-mails are good enough. They already centralize 10s of projects I follow, on
one single interface - one stop for all - . Even if all 10s of
projects would move to
another platform, and even if this new platform had all the advantaged
of e-mail.
which seemingly it doesn't (to start from not having a way to access it using
free software), there would be 10s of channels, tabs, or whatever is used
in discord for me to see the news of my projects of interest - while
in e-mail I have everything in a single stream.

Besides, since I want news on Brython commits and issues, all I had to
do was click on "follow this project" on github. Niw I get both mail messages
_and_ issuesm bugs, commits in....my e-mail inbox. So much for "one stop
for everything".

Bhaskar,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I agree with most of the replies: a mailing list and Github are enough for the development, announcements and discussion about Brython (along with the site brython.info that I maintain). Moving to other tools would take time and energy, with the risk of losing a part of the community.

I have investigated other tools lately, those provided by the French association Framasoft (https://framasoft.org/?l=en) ; they promote Open Source solutions, independant from the major Internet players. They have a Gitlab instance that we could use instead of Github, but we would lose many contributors ; and the mailing list is not as efficient as Google Groups for the moment.
