Hello beautiful mommas. Thinking about you all today on our first day of school. I just came home from drop off and was listening to this podcast and thinking about you all. It explains how difficult new motherhood (and motherhood in general) is but how a good support system and community is key. It just made me remember getting together in the 1st few months of our kids lives to have music class and lunch and just get out of the house to be together. I know all our lives have gone in different directions but I think of those early days often and I’m thankful that we were all living in Brooklyn and able to support each other thru that time.

I hope everyone is well. Andi started 2nd grade and Jonah started pre-K today.

I’d love to hear where everyone is and how everyone is doing!

Love,
Dara

I loved getting this email! I don’t know what I would have done without our little group in those early days. I do feel like you ladies kept me sane.

We just moved to Rumson, NJ. I’m sad to have left the city but my boys are loving suburbia. Lincoln starts second grade and Welles is going into Kindergarten this year- we just celebrated his 5th birthday. Time flies.

I’m back to work at a design firm called KellieFranklin and loving it! Follow us on Instagram and if you know anyone looking for an interior designer, keep us in mind! :)

Hope everyone is well.
Xo

Hi Everyone!!

Dara - I too was so psyched to get this email.  I often think about our group and how special it was to have each other during that crazy first year.  You ladies totally kept me sane.  I have been doing lots of work with women’s empowerment and women’s circles lately and I believe so strongly that every woman needs a circle like ours to be supported and seen.  It’s kinda everything.  I don’t remember any of us having really bad PPD - am I correct?  If so - we beat the odds and I bet it’s because we all had each other!!

Anyway - we are still living in Maplewood NJ - Jess - looks like you’re around an hour away from me now… by the beach?  Is that right?  I love Maplewood.  It’s a great little town and I barely miss being in the city at all…. well… maybe just the food.  This year has been pretty wild.  I don’t know if any of you have been keeping up through social media, but Adam has been working on a project called The Tiny Chef Show - and it’s kinda blowing up.  He was just featured in the NY Times last week - so big things happening there.

Here’s the article:

I just completed a 9 month life coach training program by Martha Beck and am letting that sink in.  I also did this amazing program called Mama Gena’s School of Womanly Arts Mastery Program.  Have any of you heard of Mama Gena?

She wrote a great book called PUSSY.  I believe every woman should read it.  This was quite a wild experience and definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone!  I loved it.  I also started a women’s circle here in Maplewood about a year and a half ago and am planning on co-leading another circle starting in the winter.  This one is for women to get comfortable public speaking, using their voice, etc.  It’s through a program called WomanSpeak.  I’m currently training for that.

I’m excited to be moving on to new things… was feeling a definite pull to move on with my life a little after being home with the boys for 7 years.  Still home - but building in more babysitting time and ME time.  Feels really good.

The boys are great - Theo is about to start 2nd Grade.  He is tall and confident and does Tae Kwon Do and loves to read and is a great lego builder and artist.  Wylie is entering his final year at pre-school.  He is 4 and LOVES pretend play, is obsessed with Ninjago, is athletic and sweet and is coming into himself a bit more.  He has just started getting artsy all of a sudden - and his creative brain appears to be exploding - so that’s fun.

They also drive me nuts and destroy my house daily and fight and all that good stuff.  Motherhood is still the hardest job EVER in my opinion.  But I’m beginning to see the light a bit.

Maybe we can all do a zoom call or something with the kids…. It would be so fun to see everyone!   Looking forward to hearing what everyone else is up to.

Will forever hold you ladies in my heart as my survival during year 1.  What a blessing.

Sending you all lots of love.

Xoxo

Dara - thanks for starting this! Your timing is uncanny - I am pregnant with a #3 and, with fond memories of this group, was inspired enough to convene a crew of people with babies due around the time of this #3 due date (in Durham NC, where we now live).  We had our first get-together this past weekend :)  Time will tell if it gels, but this previous experience was 100% my inspiration!

Sounds like some exciting things happening for all! As for us, Eve starts 2nd next week, and Liddy starts kindergarten. (I'm including a pic from this AM - Eve's third day of school but Liddy's first, since their school does a staggered start for prek and K). And, as referenced above, we have a third - another girl - to join come December. That feels both exciting and frightening, depending on the day (or hour, or minute), but both girls are really excited. I'm also hopeful that the fact that they're old enough to be legitimately helpful will be a good thing - definitely different from having a baby while also having a 2 yr old. I'm still at Duke, which is more or less what took us down here. Graham's been at a company that does community development real estate - so, in the same vein of what he'd done in NY, but just on a slightly smaller scale. We definitely miss NY but are liking it here - it's a nice sort of mid-sized city with a good food scene (a bit of a liberal bubble within a very purple state). I have made it back every now and again, which has been nice.

If anyone's around here, feel free to reach out! A zoom call or something also sounds nice.

Jess

These emails are a wonderful reminder of that first year. Thanks for starting the chain Dara. Congrats on growing families, new jobs & career changes!
We are still on the North Shore of MA. Everett is about to start 2nd, Thatcher will be in his last year of preschool (pre-K) and Wilder will be turning 2 y/o next month.

I’ve been home for a few years and definitely have a MAJOR  itch to be back at work! But the thought of getting all three of the kids out of the door by 7 AM to 3 different drop offs (elementary, preschool, day care) & coordinating schedules...makes me feel nuts...so I’m home one more year until Thatcher starts K.

We still listen to Vered on Spotify!! My toddler loves it & Everett sweetly requests his “baby class music” every now & again.

Hi beautiful mamas!

It's so nice to hear updates from everyone and I'm so proud of all of you!

Tim moved our company, Cereal Box, home two summers ago and since then, we've been working together. I don't edit anymore (for now) but write and produce and Tim is editing still. We do a lot of Nick Jr. so it's fun (and I know the subject matter pretty well LOL). Working from home (and together) doesn't come without challenges, but overall, the pros outweigh the cons :)

Emmet will start 2nd grade next week and is our little soccer superstar. It's all he wants to do, and he does a LOT of it :) Owen is starting Kindergarten!!! He's very artistic and sweet and currently taller than his big brother... "We all come in different sizes!" I say that daily around here :)  Kieran "Kiwi" will be in the preschool "3's" program 5 mornings a week this year, so I feel like I'm finally going to have a smidge of time  to work and do some things for myself. He's a funny little rascal and talks A LOT.

We've had a nice summer, but I'm ready for them to get back to school and into a routine.

Love each and every one of you!

Kathy

ps. Nell, amazing news about you and Adam!!! So exciting!
