Sad to hear this. Always remember Jose as a constantly smiling and upbeat guy, someone in my core group of BPers.

Bolton and I have been posting on the Brooklyn Prep Class of 1969 Facebook site for almost a week. Might be a good idea to become a member of the group as Rich has been diligent about tracking these sad events.

Larry,

Thank you for passing along this sad information.  Jose was a class act, a gentleman!  We’d chat, often, about, it seems, just about any topic.  I marveled at his photographic skills.  It’s too bad that there’s no repository for all of the shots he took.  We would all get kick out of seeing them.  I’d call Jose, at least sometimes, “Vargas-man,” sort of with a Jamaican lilt.  I have no clue as to the origin and, perhaps, I just heard others use the name.  As I recall, there was an artist named Vargas who created drawings for Playboy magazine.  Given Jose’s artistic talent with people-pictures and a camera, I know we had some fun conversations about the other Vargas’ illustrations and Jose’s potential for similar output!!

In our quiet way, we’ll all toast to Jose!! His just being there brought joy to all of us!!!

I believe I have a few 8x10 glossies that Jose did. I will post them here in a few days. He also did yearbook photography I believe. I am no longer in Brooklyn but it would be great to get them to his daughter before the service.. to let her know he has always been in our hearts and minds….VARGAS MAN!!!

Jose always had a smile on his face and in his passing I think he would want all of us to have a smile on our faces in his honor. Thanks Jose for that smile.
