Hi,

I need to replace my life raft with a new one. Currently, my raft lives in the quarter berth on a specially-built shelf. However, it keeps getting heavier every year, so I’m thinking about putting my new raft on deck. The problem is where should it go…

The ideal place for it seems to be the space between the cabin hatch and the mast. However, my boom vang will interfere with just about every raft I can find. Willow has mid-boom sheeting, added by a previous owner.

So, the two-part question:

1.       Where do others keep their deck-mounted life rafts?

2.       How “bad” would it be for a dedicated cruiser (not racer) to eliminate the boom vang (not  preventer) with mid-boom sheeting?

Regards,

Scott

Scott.

My life raft lives in the starboard locker along with the emergency tiller, a bucket and a broom. On passages it moves to the V Berth; I sleep in the quarter berth. I also have a rigid boom vang and the space below the boom is taken by the dinghy.  I would not remove the vang for a life raft.  I m not sure there is a big advantage in having the raft mounted on deck. Might be the first thing to go in situations when it might be needed...

We keep our inflatable deflated under the staysail boom.  We inflate it on the cabin roof and use the halyard winch to lower it into the water.  It may take about 30 mins to unpack it and inflate it but it’s worth not having to worry about towing as we already lost it once when the d ring that the painter was attached to pulled off.

I also store my raft in the Starboard locker. I do this for several reasons. Even though the raft is supposedly in a canister and vacuum bag it’s likely saltwater could get into the raft canister or bag if stored on deck damaging the raft or it’s contents. Also if you lost your mast it’s conceivable that the raft could be damaged depending on how it falls. If you got rolled, which can be very violent it’s very possible the raft could be ripped off its mounts. ( I got rolled once and it’s pretty amazing what got stripped off the deck including the mast). Lastly the raft is right next to the companion way and cockpit so there is no time lost getting to the raft if it was up on deck. My 3 cents!

This is one area I like the 39 and the P&S cockpit lockers over the 40 and the quarter berth. If you don’t need the quarter berth for the extra bunk, it’s nice to have the room to store the life raft in a cockpit locker.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I had kept mine in the quarter berth on my specialty shelf. It was very reassuring sleeping in there with my back against it. I, too, felt that by having it out of the weather, it had to be better for the raft. I wish my starboard locker had more available space, but too much “essential” gear is in there and I’m still worried about handling the weight myself. Not sure what I’m going to do, except build a full-size model with foamboard and check all the possible locations. Again, as in most boat projects, there are trade-offs in every decision.

(FYI, the Winslow liferaft I have in the quarter berth was done as a custom pack, back when they were agreeable to it. But, after they crushed a pair of glasses on one repack and then crushed an EPIRB on another repack [and then used the broken EPIRB, setting it off in a pool, which caused the USCG to contact me], I’m going to stay away from any custom packing this time.)

We keep a Viking valise liferaft in a cockpit locker on our B40. We don't have a quarterberth so have lazarettes port and starboard. The liferaft goes in the port lazarette over the battery box. The life raft is pretty heavy, maybe 60 lbs and I think this location is optimal. I would be worried about keeping the raft below as a galley fire might prevent access. Having a liferaft on the cabin top or foredeck makes it less accessible in some emergencies. In the lazarette it is not going to be swept away as might happen with some other locations such as attached to the stern pulpit or on the foredeck. I suppose a battery fire might cause problems. Our B 40 has enough room in the cockpit that we could just keep it there.
