My 20+ year old Mercury 9.9 outboard is on its last legs and its time to bite the bullet and find a replacement. I’m thinking I need a 9.9 4 stroke engine (but am open to any better alternatives). It needs to be able to fit in the outboard motor well. And since I lift it out of the water when not sailing to eliminate problems with marine growth, O don’t want it much heavier that the my current 82 pound engine.
Any opinions about the best options?

I use a extra long shaft Tohatsu sail master. It’s light, plenty powerful enough and extremely fuel efficient. It fits in the motor well. It does not have remote so motor well into the cockpit needs to be altered. I put a door in the opening made

Also use the tohatsu sail pro 6 hp on my Bristol 27, definitely fuel efficient 6 gallon tank last me entire season (April -October) granted I only use it to mooring etc

Keep these coming.  My 1979 Sailmaster is on it's last legs too.

One of the things one must consider when powering vessel hull speed and that at a certian point more HP will just push the boat into a squat - consider the current you are up against and the potential time under power you will require in your sailing - so if on a calm bay day sailing you will not need much to do the job. If in a tidal river or making long powered passages consider something bigger that would run at partial throttle - more HP will not make the vessel travel faster, it will only go at hull speed and then sit and squat

I use a 9.9 hp Yamaha with a long shaft on a Bristol 27.
It's a perfect motor for everything we need and rarely do we have to go up and over half throttle.
We have had to make no alterations to the boat to make the engine fit, and the control arm folds out in such a way that it's very convenient.
Thanks~R

I did not specify but mine is the Tohatsu sail pro 6hp. Seems to be plenty. I’m amazed at the fuel economy. I sail a fair amount ( al least weekly)and use less than 6 gallons a year. Good torque, hull speed easily. I’m happy I choose a smaller engine

I just picked up my new Tohatsu 6HP long shaft Sailor. Fits nicely in the outboard well ... except for one problem. There isn't room to for the shift lever to shift into forward. Minor problem! The bulkhead between the cockpit and the outboard well is just too close. I have a couple ideas about what to do about it. But hoping for some suggestions from the group.
     thanks in advance

Carl,

Our B24 came with a new Tohatsu Sailpro 6hp extra long shaft (24 inch). Yes, shifting can be a bit tight when engine is in forward position but doable. Suggest turning the engine to starboard slightly to access the shift lever with out laz bulkhead obstructing the shift lever (in neutral of course). Once in chosen gear turn engine back to the forward position and off you go. Having the capability to turn the engine port to starboard is a huge advantage when docking into tight spaces/places when used in tandem with the rudder.

Enjoy your B24!
