It is striking how similar Acacia ulicifolia (prickly Moses) and
Melaleuca nodosa look in flower. It could be an example of convergent
evolution.

Greetings folks,

A colleague has asked for assistance with identifying the weed pictured below.

It is a vine growing through scrub adjacent to private property.

The first picture identifies a seed pod, the second and third, the foliage and growing tips.

An older stem is >10 cm diameter just above ground level.

Thoughts anyone?

Hi Charles & George.

Methinks the vine in question is Parsonsia straminea (Common Silkpod/Monkey Rope Vine). The cigar-shaped seed pod is definitely a Parsonsia and the most vigorously growing and robust species, that would have a stem diam >10cm, would be this species. In the bushland around the Indigiscapes Centre (Redlands, where I live) these vines were damaging (strangling!) Swamp Box and paperbarks, and many trees had died before the vines were controlled. Until I saw this I thought that only the exotic Cat's Claw Creeper, Madeira Vine and some climbing Asparagus were capable of killing native trees.

I guess you guys have been somewhat busy with the Covid-19 testing program! I thank you for the good work that QML is doing to support the government agendas. I'm glad I've retired from Public Health --- can't see myself doing a Jeannette --- would have no time for Botany and Entomology!
