Hi All,

Does anyone know of the tree Matt is referring to below?

I am not familiar with the tree itself and the photo is not that informative but it does seem like an impressive specimen so was wondering if anyone is familiar with it/its species?

I am passing through tomorrow so I will attempt to get a better photo and sample for proper ID, but if anyone knows I would greatly appreciate the heads-up.

Cheers

Hi Andrew,

So we are after some help to ID this tree. We believe it is a Cinnamomum oliveri, Olivers Sassafras (see attached) but not 100%. We were wondering if anyone in your area knows of it (as it appears to be the only one of its kind around) or if anyone from one of the catchment groups or habitat Brisbane groups might know? Any help would be appreciated.

We have ruled out so far, Angohora spp. and Camphor laurel.

The location of the tree is shown below.

Cheers,

Matt Howe

Hi Andrew,

I was hoping you could advise who is the catchment officer for Enoggera? I have a random question regarding a particular site in Ashgrove along Enoggera Creek.

Thanks,

From the bark, Aphananthe philippinensis. You really need a photo of the leaves.

Hi, Shealagh, If you zoom in you can more or less see the leaves. They look pinnate to me, a bit like a red cedar, tho I'm sure it's not that!

From the habit (growing in an open park/street situation) and tessellated bark, red cedar is a possibility but there looks to be a flindersia in the background confusing the issue. Leaf close up would help. If it is a red cedar there may be seed pods or even seedlings in the vicinity (they can be prolific and a bit weedy :) )

Hi all

I'm pretty sure that your tree is a North American species of Taxodium (true cypresses). The dark brown flaky bark is typical. There are several species which all have soft feathery foliage, so Andrew hopefully today you will be able to get a specimen or closeup photo of the leaves for confirmation. They grow to large size and many have been planted as specimen trees in Australia. We had a Florida Swamp Cypress in our Sydney garden where I grew up. The scout property Eprapah at Victoria Point has one such specimen.

Cheers,
John Moss
