Vine ID please

A colleague would like help with identifying some remnant vines at her bushcare site located at Carwoola St and Simpsons Rd Bardon.

Photos are a little unclear but see if they are good enough for ID.

I suggest Parsonsia straminea for vine 1, but the image for vine 2 is just not sharp enough. Could your colleague try again?

Hi Marina,

Yes - Parsonsia straminea again I'd say.

As far as management goes, this vine can climb all over regenerating (and older) trees, and I have no problems with it being cut back in those situations.

Thanks Bill. We find Parsonsia, although a native, to be quite a pest in our reveg property at Bunya. It will smother and bring down small trees and can get quite rampant. It might be less of a problem in more mature forest I imagine.

Hi again

Photo of 2nd vine. Very coarse leaves, they feel dehydrted or brittle to the touch. The stem is brittle and fine. Slow to grow. Never seen it flower.  

Parsonia is too heavy for remnant trees. The site was cleared for a development. Much of that vine is on the ground. Im not sure what to do with it. Would appreciate any  suggestions. (Ignore scrambling lily in the photo)

Hello Marina,

My bushcare group has been restoring a site on Cabbage Tree Creek where there's some remnant as well as regrowth parsonsia. The mature parsonsia is an amazing plant devoting its energy into flowers and seeds (instead of the rambling understorey in regrowth). The flowers provide important winter food for birds & butterflies. It forms a dense screen on the forest edge where it makes great habitat for a range of animals too & provides a cool microclimate/shades understorey.  We have needed to manage the regrowth parsonsia on the ground around new plantings but it can be a fast habitat replacement if left to take over some sacrificial plants (e.g black wattles).  Unfortunately we  had a new team of council staff come through our site in the last 6 months & looked at vines as if they were all pests which the mature parsonsia certainly wasn't.  They cut off the mature parsonsia close to the ground where the vines had a trunk diameter of 100 to 135mm.  I'm unsure how old these vines would be but imagaine they must have taken many decades to have become part of the remnant canopy forest.

Gee Im sorry to hear about the Council teams damage. Im going to let the growth on the ground stay where it is but a lot of the vines are srangling smaller trees and have to go. Id rather do the site than let contactors at it.  Hard yards (not that Im working on the creek as per direction)
