An internatyional proposal perhaps for next year or, for the future?

Hello All,

I received from the Braillists Fondation newsletter the message that you find below my signature regarding a couple of days in which would be possible to see the main Braille devices from the main companies,  and I would like to make you a proposal… what do you think about it?.

I  Goodmorningit’s a great initiative, I really  hope  taht in next years it will be able to repeat it  and that it could be become in an international initiative.
Infact a a proposal for the next year, when the pandemic will allow it, it would be great to create in Uk  some kind of “”International Braille week””., organized by Braillists  fondation.
I am thinking in a week,
in which people from several countries could be together and share together their experiences regarding Braille, and to be able to take part in an event like this, in which we could have the possiblity to see the main Brialle devices produced by the main companies like Bristol Braille, Huamnware, Sight and Sound, etc. I think that it would be something really great and very interesting for all of us, what do you think about?.

Braille and Beer after Sight Village, Tuesday 17 August
For the first time in nearly a decade, Sight Village will be held at its home venue of Queen Alexandra College, Court Oak Road, Harborne, Birmingham, B17 9TG. It will be open 9:00 AM-5:00 PM on Tuesday 17 August and 9:00 AM-3:30 PM on Wednesday 18 August, and pre-registration is essential (https://braillists.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f8b3c5f851151c8180717ff70&id=744b8fab1b&e=de6a496c1c) .

A wealth of braille products will be exhibited over the two days from suppliers including RNIB, Sight and Sound Technology, HumanWare and, of course, Bristol Braille Technology.

Sadly, there is a limited number of exhibitors this year due to COVID-19, and the Braillists won’t have a presence at the exhibition itself. However, a few of us will be meeting for one of our “Braille and Beer” events after the first day, and you’d be very welcome to join us.

We’ll be meeting at The Old House at Home, 193, Lordswood Road, Harborne, Birmingham, B17 8QP. The pub is 700 yards from the College, with a bus stop just outside.

We hope to be able to demonstrate a small selection of braille products during the evening including the Canute and Orbit Reader. If you have a braille product that you’d like to show to other braille enthusiasts, please bring it along!

We will also be bringing A4 braille frames, styluses and 8-cell word forming blocks to give away to anyone who wants one, and offering free 1:1 training on the use of this equipment to anyone who needs it. If you have already obtained your equipment by post, but need help using it, this is an ideal opportunity for you to receive it.

The gathering will be very informal and there are no set start or end times, but you can expect a flurry of activity at about 6:00 PM, once people have packed down after Sight Village.

This event is being supported by Bristol Braille Technology CIC. If you would like to meet up at QAC and walk over to the pub in a group, or you have other enquiries on the day, please find Ed or Steph on the BBT stand or call 020 3893 3392.

Perkins Braillers Available on Free, Long-Term Loan
Our partner organisation, Vision Through Sound (https://braillists.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f8b3c5f851151c8180717ff70&id=07c000c72b&e=de6a496c1c) , which has been managing our free equipment, has been offered a sizeable donation of Perkins Braillers from Portsmouth Association for the Blind (https://braillists.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f8b3c5f851151c8180717ff70&id=f66ee58b45&e=de6a496c1c) , with logistics support from Bristol Braille Technology CIC (https://braillists.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f8b3c5f851151c8180717ff70&id=b28935a763&e=de6a496c1c) .

Stephanie Sergeant, Proprietor of Vision Through Sound and well-known to many readers of this Newsletter, has generously agreed to make some of these machines available to Braillists members on free, long-term loan. They will be offered on a first come, first served basis, but with priority given to people who are learning braille.

The Passing of Jim Taylor
We were extremely saddened to receive the message below from Mobeen Iqbal. Although Jim was not himself a member of the Braillists community per se, he was involved in a number of braille-related projects in his lifetime and many readers will have known him.

It is with great sadness that I report the death of Jim Taylor. He was resting after his breakfast. A member of staff looked in on him and he had sadly passed away peacefully in his sleep. I know that Jim touched the lives of many people. I have been in touch with Jim regularly over the last 10 years. He always looked on the bright side of life, a quality I greatly admired. His knowledge of Braille and music was admirable and second to none. He was very ill over the past couple of years. Jim, Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure. You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure. May you rest in peace. You will always be remembered in our prayers.

Using the Focus Blue Braille Displays, Thursday 12 August at 2:00 PM
As part of their “Unpacking Tech that Makes you Feel at Home” series, join Sight and Sound for a webinar all about the fifth generation of the popular Focus Blue braille displays. I notice you've also emailed the Help address, but I thought I'd reply here in the hopes of starting a discussion.

The exhibition mentioned in the Newsletter is Sight Village, which is operated by Queen Alexandra College and takes place three or four times a year in different cities in the UK. Pandemic permitting, the next one will be in Cardiff in October.

"Braille and Beer" takes us back to our routes. We've been organising these events since 2014, usually after a Sight Village event, and they are usually just a social opportunity, but of course if someone wants to bring some equipment along it's always interesting to see it!

The UK does also observe National Braille Week. This is organised by Sight Scotland (formerly Royal Blind) and takes place in the second week in October, to coincide with World Sight Day.

So to your proposal:

In the first instance, QAC does not restrict Sight Village to the UK. If you wanted to fly over from Spain, you'd be very welcome – and if you were in the UK and wanted to come to a Braille and Beer event, you'd be welcome here too! For the present, given that we have quite limited funding and quite strict conditions on how (and where) we can spend it, organising an "official" international event is probably beyond what we're able to achieve, so this middle ground is about the best I can offer.

We're not in the business of stepping on other people's toes, so since Sight Scotland are already running National Braille Week, for the present we'll continue to let them do that. However, I think there's definitely more scope here for us to be involved and, over time, perhaps shape it into what we want it to be. It's early days yet, but I'm hoping that we will run at least one event during National Braille Week and this could well be the basis for making it international, on a low level, if people from other countries are able to participate. For us to do it well, we would need a joined up approach with braille stakeholders in other countries through, e.g. the International Council on English Braille and the World Braille Council. We are already building strong links with these organisations, so it would certainly be possible to keep building year on year.

As a starting point for this year – and making absolutely no promises at this point, as we need to work through the implications with the others – how would you feel about a series of themed events during National Braille Week? They would have to be remote – via Zoom – but could be divided in a number of ways:

• Manufacturers, as you've already suggested – Humanware one day, Hims the next, Freedom Scientific/Elbraille the next and so on
• Product groups – braille displays one day, embossers the next, translation software the next and so on
• Themes – braille technology one day, braille teaching the next, braille history the next and so on and so on

We could open up for socialising for an hour at say 6:00 PM, hold a focussed hour from 7:00 PM, and stay open for more socialising afterwards until 9:00 PM.

I can't stress enough that these are only suggestions and may not happen, or may not happen completely, but what do you think? Is this along the sort of lines that you would be happy with, given our budget?

Hi Harvey. You are correct. So far as I know there are no Braillist
subscribers organising a Braillists event for Sight Village Exeter next
month. We used try and arrange something for the Birmingham and London
events, but not usually the others.

However if anyone does want to meet up with other Braillists after or
during SV Exeter it would make sense to use the forum to informally
organise it.

Hello Mathew and All,

first at all,  sorry for the dealy in my answer.

The Braille Week in Scottland sounds very well, but Octuber perhaps it’s not the best time for travelling (for working people, usually the holidays are  compulsory in July or August) and so, it would be  little bit difficult.

But, that 

 “Sight Village” sounds very well as well, ant hte Braillist Fondation event after  that as well.

Regarding  the possibility to organize something international, of course, I know that the Braillists Fondation  has not found for it, and so, of course each participant would pay his fees, but I think that it could be interested if someone could help us to organize good accomodations, deplacements, and everything, and it would be great that all people  from different countries could be in the UK at the same time, for the same eent, because, I think that in this way all of us (UK people as well) could share more and better.

Anyway, as the Pandemic unfortunately, is not still finished we have a year for thinking about it.

I know that Jim touched the lives of many people. I have been in touch with Jim regularly over the last 10 years. He always looked on the bright side of life, a quality I greatly admired. His knowledge of Braille and music was admirable and second to none. He was very ill over the past couple of years. Jim, Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure. You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure. May you rest in peace. You will always be remembered in our prayers.

Using the Focus Blue Braille Displays, Thursday 12 August at 2:00 PM
As part of their “Unpacking Tech that Makes you Feel at Home” series, join Sight and Sound for a webinar all about the fifth generation of the popular Focus Blue braille displays. The session will be presented by Ron Miller, Blindness Technology Product Specialist at Vispero (manufacturers of the Focus line of displays), who is himself blind and a braille user.

The session will also cover other hardware products from Vispero including the Pearl camera.
