Hello Boxsters,
We are still busy transferring Chris' old files to my system.
The PSD (PhotoShop Document) folder is huge and we just finish with the Revell entries.
This weeks Free Download is one I had not seen in years.
As I sift through the files I am seeing art that is not being displayed on the Boxart Den Gallery.
This weeks FD is one of them.
The early 1950s the plastic model industry was just getting started, and with the invention of polystyrene plastic the industry was on its way.
One of the early adopters of this plastic was, Helicopter for Industry.
They released a series of scale models of current and experimental helicopters.
These kits were very crude by today's standards, but for their time they were amazing.
This week we present the HFI art that was featured on their release of the Piasecki HUP Retriever, US Navy helicopter.
They also had a different box and art for the US Army version, the H-25 Army Mule.
HFI closed their doors in the mid-1950s and Aurora gained possession of the HFI molds.
Aurora released them for many years and today, only this one has been recently released by Atlantis.
The Atlantis release includes decals for both versions.
The HUP first flew in 1948 and was produced until 1954, with almost 340 of them built for the Navy and Army.
Some found their way into service with other nations.
The last ones were retired in 1965 by the French Navy.
I selected a dozen images of this helicopter for your enjoyment.
All the images are 1280 pixels.

What a fabulous restoration!  Big Tip of the Hat as the painting looks like it was just completed...

I don't recall seeing this particular kit, but I remember seeing the company name on boxes.  By golly, I may just have to swing by ebay.  I am curious to see if there are any of these kits available.

As always, thanks so much for the hard work and sharing these treasures!

More great photos this time around. My favorite is probably the HU-1 aircraft with the Day-Glo followed closely by the Yellow Willow Grove aircraft.

I keep telling myself I'm going to pick up the Atlantis kit, I just haven't gotten around to it.

Sadly the last flying HUP crashed in 2009 when it hit power lines.  Here is a cut and paste of the accident news.

The owner of a Piasecki HUP-1 and two friends were killed when the vintage twin-rotor helicopter hit a power line on takeoff and went down.

Authorities believe Joseph Pike, the helo's owner, was at the controls when the accident occurred. The two friends have not been identified pending notification of relatives.

Inland News Today in Riverside, California reports that FAA spokesman Ian Gregor says the helicopter, which was designed in the 1940’s, was actually built in 1951.

“It was originally for military use but was later purchased and had been operated as a civilian aircraft for quite some time," he said.

The HUP-1 was reportedly headed for the Fla-Bob Airport in Rubidoux for an air show.
