Re-upping this from 2 years ago on March 26... maybe we'll see a similar Maple bloom next week when forecasted to warm up?

I don't think Maple blooms usually last long before being knocked out by frost, but if conditions align, a strong colony can bring in a good bit of nectar (and pollen) from this source.

Btw, last Wednesday, bees were bringing in bright yellow and dark orange pollen. Seemed to be equal amounts of both.

Hi, Mark
Thanks for the report.  Got a theory about what plants were providing the pollen?  What's blooming around you?
I've seen a pussy willows catkins (?) emerging but I don't see pollen on them yet. The pollen-laden stamens should be obvious, righ?

Bonus question: Has anyone seen any bumblebee queens out yet?

Thanks.
Gretchen

Hi Gretchen,

My best guess would be willow for the yellow...? I don't have a clue about the orange. Poplars or alders?

I have some old frames I think from last year that have pollen in them.  Can this pollen be given back to the bees?

Laurie, yes I'd guess frames of pollen will be fine, they convert it into a relatively stable bee bread when packing into comb.

But I'd wait to start re-arranging and adding frames like this til later when the colony starts expanding. Or give the frames to a new package if you're getting one of those.

Could be skunk cabbage or willow, both wetland edges plants. Not much else blooming except crocus.

A large Silver maple blooming today at Arnold Arboretum, only at the tip top. Red maple buds still closed. 90C69B6B-496D-46E0-8000-0E4B1ECF5FB6_1_105_c.jpeg

The bees were bringing in the pollen today on this warm, sunny day :)  I believe the light beige pollen is maple.....

(excuse me) and didn't see any honey bees. The tree was hazardous and was being removed.
I was surprised to find carpenter ants 65 ft up

Noah M, so fascinating! Many questions....  I hope you are on the swarm catching list.

So the buds were open on this tree?

I saw glistening fresh nectar in cells yesterday, two hives, two different locations. I would've guessed from Silver maple.

Yeah, the top of the tree was in full flower. Maybe they had already been there earlier in the day. I can't imagine there aren't hives close by in JP near Frankli Park.
I think I signed up for the swarm catchers list. I've got a couple attempts under my belt and I've got climbing gear. Looking forward to getting into my hive and see what they''ve been up to so far this season.
I thought one of them was a goner when I cleaned out ~5000 dead bees from the entrance in late February but there been a ton of activity there, including inbound pollen.

Awesome Noah. Let me know if you ever need a hand. I have a harness and keen to learn more arborist skills.

Great to hear your colony overwintered and is cranking now. Yeah, lots of dead bees out front is usually a really good sign in winter, oddly enough.

Re-upping these photos of blooming sugar maple in March 26, 2019. Seems every spring I have anxiety about when the maples will bloom. In fact, I'm making fondant rn!

I went through my surviving hives yesterday, my bees in Lincoln were bringing in pollen, so presumably something is already blooming!

Yeah same here Tal, I've seen them bringing in pollen for awhile but not any surplus nectar going into cells yet. That would make me happy.
