Hey guys
Getting harder to find parts ...

Getting ready to replace the clutch. It’s starting to slip. Was hoping to be a bit preventative in case the flywheel needed replacing. Figured already in there. My luck...flywheel is no longer available.

My options are
1) lightweight after market ...would prefer the oem one for drivability but this may be my only option.

2) resurface current one. Not sure if there is some min spec for this. Not even sure it’s a realistic possibility.

Anyone have some good input to share or where to source a new OEM flywheel?

All the best
Jason

M5 has a light flywheel stock, 12lb or so.   Steel flywheels are difficult to resurface.  If in good condition, just polish it with sandpaper.  240 then 400 grit random pattern.

I’m in the same boat. Definitely getting parts from FCP. I’ll wait till I get the trans out before deciding on the flywheel but all comments and suggestions welcome. My M5 mostly sits in the garage, and things break just from sitting if you can figure that one out. Took it out for a drive several months ago snd clutch went to the floor and It’s partially engaged. It’s not the slave cause that was replaced recently. My summer job to replace the clutch

Hang on CK! Are you sure there’s no air in the hydraulic line? Happened to me when a dealer replaced the slave. You have to take the cylinder off to get all the air out.

Pretty darn sure. It’s been a while since I replaced the slave. BUT, since you mentioned it. It really can’t hurt to double check before I drop the trans Thanks for the suggestion

So latest update on my flywheel saga ...

Received the new oem clutch.

Can’t find OEM flywheels anywhere. Probably NLA.

I did find 2 options both of which are lightened flywheels

1) Rennsport located in the uk has one option for our cars that is 4.5kg ...approx 10 lbs. Stock is 12.6 lbs?

2) JB racing lightweight flywheel. This one weighs 8 lbs.

I don’t track the car so driveability is important.

Anyone have experience with lightweight flywheels and overall impressions / feedback?

Thanks guys!
Jason

I had a JB flywheel (blue!) on my E30 track car along with an E30 M3 clutch. That was a great combo but then the M5 is an entirely different animal! Did you try contacting UUC? They used to sell “M3 upgrade” packages using the E34 M5 clutch and a different Sachs flywheel.

UUC owner, Rob used to have a M5 touring so I’m sure he can advise.  Try contacting them
