Water Pump NLA ?

Perhaps I am coming late to the party, but I am finding the water pump for the S38 (3.6l) is No Longer Available.
I did mine a few years ago when the replacement from the dealer was under $200 with the CCA discount. The prices I’m seeing on Bimmerworld, ECS,Turner etc is like $450!!! And you can’t get one. Is there a source I’m missing? I might like to get one for safe keeping…..

Wasn't there a billet racing pump at one time, but 3x the stock pump?

There has to be one out there that fits other cars, with a different
part number. Last resort, do like back in the day when they rebuilt
stuff. What is there to wear out except the bearings?

Impellers can erode but bearings and seals are the main things.

interesting. Someone has figured a market for S38 waterpumps. Here's on currently on ebay for 1000 $ / Euro ! Claims it fits B36, which it does not accoring to realoem.

B38 pumps are still available at many places. I wonder what is different?

I few questions for the group. After several medium length trips, the M5 would crank but not start. Luckily in my driveway.

Diagnostics so far: fuel pump fuse doesn’t light, but is good. Fuel pump relay not getting power, but is functional.

I changed the fuel pump within last 2 years.

So, could it be a crankshaft sensor? If so, how does that work? Does it shut down power to the fuel pump? I am amazed if it does all that.

Or could it be the in-line fuse off the battery? That looks original and is wrapped up tight.

Any other failure modes?

 

What do you gentlemen think?

The crank position sensor on my E30 died, also in my driveway, luckily. I forget exactly how I concluded that it must be the CPS, but that's where the signs pointed. My car cranked but didn't start. Of course there are other causes.

After being stranded twice with failed CPS, I think of them as a preventative maintenance item at 100K mi, since my German cars tend to be older. Failures were in a MBz and in my E30 en route to the track at Laguna Seca. Happened to a fellow E30'er at an autoX, but fortunately the mounting bolt was very loose so easy fix.

The crank sensor tells the DME the crankshaft is spinning.  Neither fuel nor spark is delivered to an engine that is stationary.

Follow up question: when driving “around town” mostly in third gear, the area around the shifter (gearbox) gets surprisingly hot. When driving “ up tempo” say on a highway , the area is not hot ( cooled by the higher speed?). No engine temp issues on the dash, ever. 

So, does the high temp at lower speeds fry the crank position sensor?

Something that feels very hot to a person, may be 130-150F.  This is pretty cool in the world of metals and plastics.  Also, the crank sensor is up front on the timing cover, not in the tunnel where exhaust parts live.

... the BMW techs told me the CPS is temp sensitive and can fail as temp increases. Matches our limited experience. So might a loose mounting bolt.

Gentlemen and Ladies,

 

At a recent and foolish trip to a local mechanic, my door check on the DD (540I) blew out.  “Just fell out”

See pic. I’ve ordered a replacement part . Anyone have thoughts on pre-installation prep. I see only the upper Torx bolt hole.

I’m  thinking some auto body welding over the wound but concerned the fit might become out of alignment.

That door needs welding.  The koala piece is a reinforcement for a minor crack which occurs first.  Don't go to a BMW repair shop, go to a fabricator.  Take him the door.
