Bumper over-riders.  I think that is the correct term.  It seems most Dimers delete them, but I want them for my cars.

While recently parsing some inventory, I noticed they came in at least three flavors:

1 - Symmetric for rear bumpers, as they mount to a relatively 'flat' arc.

2 & 3 - Left and Right for front bumper bits to better align with the more highly curved bumper.

The rubber absorber seems to be consistent and universal.

I have about 20+ units here and this seems to be consistent for all USA production years ('68-73).  I think I once observed these differences many years ago - but - as consistent with best recall methods, one must pay close attention.  At the time, I probably just said,  "Hey - look at that!" and never properly filed the observation.

No help on the clutch options but I must share my observations about that build.

I makes me think of the x-box Forza gamers in the naughties era (2004 - 2011+), where the 510 was the 2nd most popular vehicle due to the light rigid frame and available drive-train swaps, such as this 4-wheel drive setup.

I never touched an x-box but had younger friends who advised me as to the Dime status when I'd pull up to their houses or places of employment.

I'd bet this record is true and readily found online...

All I've ever seen were chrome units.  I think solid rubber may be 73 or later year Datsun part?  Possibly a swap?  Not sure.

A couple years ago Carson and I took Red to get dinner. As we walked out, some kid in a 240SX in the parking lot had apparently been waiting to see whose 510 it was - he asked about the car, we talked for a while and then he showed me pictures of his 510. He looked young, barely older than Carson.

Me: "How old are you?"
Him: "23"
Me; "How did you learn about 510?"
Him: "Playing Forza, thought it was the coolest car ever so I had to buy one"

Even after buying one and having a 240SX he still thinks the 510 is cool. These things really do speak to some people, and after all these years I am still amazed that younger generations find them cool, too.

Analytically, in my mind they're an unspectacular car compared to what you can do far cheaper and better with a different platform these days. Emotionally though...

+1 on the all rubber ones on '73s only. Pretty sure the bumper laws changed for USA model year 1973. '73 911s also sprouted similar rubber boobs. Then in '74 the 5mph impact bumpers were mandated.

Mainland US market cars had metal overriders except in '73, which were big ugly rubber. The '73 bumpers and brackets were different from earlier years. I can't remember if the Hawaiian market cars had different bumper bits. I know Asco(?) offered 3rd party bits that were basically round bars above the OE bumper.

All that said I always removed them on my 510s and used polish carriage bolts to fill the holes. I liked the clean look of the bumper by itself

Looks like the chrome and rubber (or all rubber) jobs were called “Bumper Guards” in the Datsun accessory brochure, though clearly they are referred to as “overriders” In the 510 parts catalog:

Sorry to say none of them would have helped with my recent Bambi encounter, though if was daily driving a 510 and had to park on the street often, I would install the ’73 rubber baby buggy bumpers…or perhaps a set of ‘roo guards.

When someone says overriders I always think, the tubular things that go above the bumper. Do these even have a purpose or is it just pure bling?
Not sure what I would call the all rubber or rubber chrome things though. Bumper bumpers?? 
I have always deleted these bumper bumpers FWIW. I probably have ten sets of them lying around.
I have never seen the all-rubber ones in person, except for on my brother's 1200s.

Ten sets?  That's 40 pieces. Wow.  I only have 24. All have some level of damage and/or rust. 

These bits do offer a crude and minimally effective mechanism at very low speed to prevent bumper of car with equivalent height from 'over-riding' and impacting the body. They line up well with those police cruiser pushers. <g>

Big rubber boobs were '73 only.  And the bumpers were very different, as were the bumper mounts.  Three holes on the frame rail instead of two.

I actually have a '73 bumper in decent shape.  Gotta have the brackets to use it, though.  I do not.

The AMCO overriders (also called granny bars back then) were on a few of my cars. Here in NYC everyone uses the Hellen Keller method of parking (Google Hellen Keller if you don't know who she was). On one car I switched to the '73 big rubber bumper guards. IIRC I had to switch to a sturdier bumper support braclets. I don't remember if I had to drill the front bumper or buy a '73 bumper. My 240Z had those AMCO bars, the front one saved me from many hood repairs, although I had to pull it out to open the hood after parking in Manhattan. That was with Defensive Parking: Parking, with the car out of gear and the hand brake on just a little.

Someone recently wrote they weren't getting all of the messages
others are responding to. Well my message was obviously seen by
Chris, but it hasn't come through to me yet from the list. I'm using
and email client and archive the emails on a pc.
