Fuel Tank Sender, Fuel Level

I replaced the fuel tank sender with one from a 240Z supplier a
couple of years ago. It's optimistic, but I don't remember by how
much. Anyone have a clever way I tell if the fuel level is below the
sender opening? I want to reset the sender.

I have had some luck with opening the trunk early in the morning and simply looking at the condensation line on the outside of the tank. When the conditions are right, the tank sweats at the internal fuel level.

Not sure where near empty is. While I have been working on it I have
put in a gallon or 2 at a time. I do remember on my way to Summit
Point 2 years ago I put more gas in than I have ever been able to put
in a 510, 11+ gallons IIRC.

When I siphoned the tank to replace it.....years ago, I still had gas
in the tank, but probably under the sending unit hole. I suspect the
syphon hose curved at the bottom of the tank. I have only a 1 and 2
gallon gas can. Trying to avoid buying another for just one use. I
guess I'll get as much out as I can and then drive it until I run out of gas.

IIRC the first line on the fuel gauge is about 2 gallons remaining,
at least that's where I will try to set it.

It's parked indoors right now, but I can try to put it outside when
it is warm and use a laser thermometer to find the line.

Some note on changing the sedan fuel tank sending unit:
If you have 2 gallons in the tank you can remove the sending unit
with any leaking.
There is a set screw for the float rod, don't bend the rod.
I bought my sending unit from Z Car Depot, I am not sure that's the
reason I had to recalibrate it for the 510. As delivered it made the
gauge read optimistic.
I couldn't drain the tank with the drain plug, the car is in a
residential building, I didn't want the tenants complaining. The only
other spot was outside up against that same building.
I used a Harbor Freight Multi-Use Transfer Pump (siphon). The
discharge container must be lower than the intake hose.
I have photos of where I set it.
