More “new to me”.   The OEM headlight switch has TWO 12v inputs – one straight from the battery and one fused from the OEM fusebox. What kind of diabolical setup is this?

OK, still not as weird as the Nissan ECU having 5 separate chassis ground pins, four separate sensor grounds and three separate 12v power pins.

WR from the battery is the power source.
RY from the switch provides 12V to the lights (HR and HL) in the fuse box.

There is only one 12V source into the switch.

Also, I believe second power source is the single GW wire via fuse-box, also live, except to power the marker light system on the outgoing GW / GL wire pair.  This applies to '70+ models.

The GW is the one I was referring to.   White/Red come from the starter and there’s a fusible link at the starter.   The GW is from the fuse box and runs to the markers as Paolo stated.

I have discovered my DRL’s need to be wired separately from the rest of the markers, as I want them on any time the key is at “ON” – so, not controlled by the headlight switch.

DRL’s you ask?  Link here: Twin Turbo Datsun 510 - powered by 300ZX. Miscellany (yes they have a little “start up” show before being solid).

Dave,

I hope you are wiring the headlight switch to the seatbelt buzzer so that it tells you when you leave the lights on as you open the door. (I made a schematic for this some years ago but never got around to it)

I will have some mechanism along those lines, yes.  I am also considering having the headlights run through the ACC power and a delay relay so the key ACC power is required to turn on the headlights and the delay relay will keep them powered up to 30 seconds after turning the key to the OFF position.

I don’t think there are many scenarios where I need the headlights on without the key in the ignition.

Following.
Please let us see what you come up with.
Nathan, There was a simple alarm sold at auto parts stores more than 25 years ago. It was a Piezo alarm with 2 wires. One wire came with a U clip that fit on the cold(?) side of the headlight fuse. The fuse fit into the U clip. I don't remember where the other wire went. On that 510 the fusebox was on a hinge behind the glove box, mounted upside down from it usual position. Easy to hear the alarm. That fuse box location meant less corrosion on the terminals.

Ah, Mr. Gadget.

A solid idea.  With all these 'upgrades', are you still using the stock string shaft mounted turn-signal switch and in concert with the dash mounted wiper/headlight switch setup?

If so, consider a fairly simple upgrade (by my standards) using something like this:

Steve, et. al,

If you have done a relay upgrade for the headlamps, I find the simplest and most practical adjustment is to take power, as Dave notes, from the ACC circuit to drive the lighting switch rather than the stock LIVE source.  It adds only a few milliamps to that fused circuit.

Who really needs to turn on the lights when there is no key in the ignition?

You will need to be sure the hazard switch is still connect to live +12V.

This fits the 510? I actually like this idea because I could move the hazard switch off the steering column and put it where the current wiper switch is.

I love little mods that only a 510 owner would notice but non-Datsun people would think is perfectly normal, I think Red has 12-13 of these at this point.

I have not used that specific part, but the 720 column switches I've used in the past had the larger diameter steering column shaft - 1.5" I think vs 1.25"?

I prefer the later model Nissans switches with more features for wiper controls and lighting, but these all have the smaller shaft.  Some have enough plastic material which can be bored to fit the 510 shaft.  Custom shrouding will be needed.  I've use parts of the stock shroud with some 3" ABS pipe.

See here:

https://datsun510.com/index.php?/gallery/image/24563-finger-tip-lighting-and-wiper-controls/

I believe that one came from an 810 which has a small axial button on the light lever that I use for special purpose, as described in comments.

Dave,

This may be a better reference for the 720 unit - larger diameter shaft.

Ordered, thanks!   I have electric power steering to install and I can add this at the same time.

$35 is a cheap experiment at the very minimum.
