I would like my toolboxes to expand vertically where the blocks are displayed under the category header instead of a new side panel.

The reason is because I am not using blocky for code but to create a workflow so I do not have that many categories and blocks. If I use a accordion style toolbox then I can save on display real estate instead of a mostly empty toolbox category display panel.

Can the blockly team implement this feature or point me in the right direction to customize my toolbox to achieve this?

If you don't have very many categories and blocks, how about using a flyout toolbox and use labels in the toolbox as category headers?  If you want an accordion type effect you could use buttons instead of (or in addition to) labels and dynamically change your toolbox.
