Hi all,

I need to change freeswitch to a paid one to have a smooth audio in meeting.

Anyone with experience or idea should please help me out.

Thanks.

you really do not have to replace freeswitch to get better audio quality - you can modify the settings to get excellent audio results.

if you have problems with audio at all, you should check other components / hardware ...

cheers

No need to pay for freeswitch.

You need a good server provider with plenty of cpu/memory and bandwidth.  Then install the free BigBlueButton.

This is the dev roup, post setup questions in bigbluebutton-setup forums.

You created a thread almost like this one (how do I replace media server X with Y because I want to make voice better)
21 days ago (Dec 1). Answers were given there. We pointed you to a very rich thread about tuning audio in FreeSWITCH.

Do not spin up redundant threads in mailing lists. It will probably not give you different answers in such a short timespan and
it'll clutter the list with redundant info.

Thanks for your time @ Paulo.

I made the changes to our test server.

The following is the effect we notice on the test server.

1. Users voice became electronic and more obvious i.e their voice doesn't look like their original voice
2. Users' voice still skips sometimes.
3. Revibration occurs when a user is talking.

That's the reason I decided to go for paid Freeswitch.

Hi sdame,

I have set up the bigbluebutton on the following configuration:

CPU: 8 vCore
RAM: 32768 MB
Storage: 640 GB SSD
Bandwidth: 6000 GB

The bigbluebutton is working fine. But I have issues with the audio (Freeswitch) & media server (Kurento) not working effectively.

That's why I am looking for help.

Thanks for your time. Regards

you should point such information out in your posts

your problem are not the settings - your problem is the machine. Set up a new instance on a bare metal dedicated server without vcpus - there you won't have such problems.

If you choose virtualiced servers, make sure the cpu is dedicated and no vcpu.

Let us know if this solves your problem - and if you think the settings cause it, post the settings you use.

a payed freeswitch will not change anything

Paid freeswitch, can you explain?  Is freeswitch on a different server and someone hosting for you?

Where are your users located, what type of networks are they using to connect into your server?

Does it sound bad with just 5 users on the server?     Or are you trying to run 100’s on a server?

How many are on in the conference?

Lots of pieces missing to the puzzle.      This is really a setup configuration issue, not dev releated.

You can also try holding a meeting on

to test the audio as well.

Hi Martin,

I just open BBB dev group to create a topic for audio issue but I just found this topic. For our environment we are using Oracle server which is same provider for zoom and jitsi.
2- We are using 8 cups per server and dedicated
3- Stun/Turn/BBB servers all are in one country and it's same country of our students and tutors. Thus the latency should be in the lowest point

Before we used your audio settings to adjust the quality but by time we found the audio not sync with video correctly to we back to default setting. Everyday there's users are claiming about audio cracking up .

Please suggest to me what I have to do next to marinate this! Please not when we are using jitsi we d not face any audio issue at all  and as I knew, jitsi are using  freeswitch too...

I remember when there was a problem about iphone issue and some users could not hear well "Some components of BBB conflicted with BBB features" Mario said .

I am afraid this is why we still facing daily audio issue. Now all our environments are in 2.2.31 ...

We are exhausted from this essential issue and any suggestion would be appreciated...

Hi,

did you test via the bigBlueButton demo server? do you encounter issues there too?

crackly noises or sync problems  - as far as I can tell - can have three causes mainly:

1. the virtualization - timing of the internal clock

2. hardware resources

3. bad bandwith or connections

with the tuned settings we did not even have crackles on virtual machines so the connection may be causing this for you. Really would be good if you could test another provider and see if you have the same issues there.

cheers

Hi Fred & Martin,

We have 3 users on the demo.bigbluebutton.

After 10 minutes of continuous talking, the voice starts cracking and more inaudible the more, then we left the room.

Thanks for helping.

- We already used hetzern and left it because of latency then we used AWS because it was near to our location and finally we used oracle and they are the nearest server location in our country and I can grantee it's not server hardware issue because with all server provider the issue still come up!

We have also observed the problem since 2.2.28 but could not localize it.

I think one of the clients was the problem. Once the webcam was off, the sound got better

Thanks, Brof

Are you concluding that is a Latency issue or is it an issue that is just to be overlooked because it can't be resolved now?

Hi  odejinm,
I think it's something related to the BBB components. Once user start screen share or camera their voice start crackling while I am sure 100% if !they use zoom they wont face such experience. I believe the components not running effectively cause of some behaviors

Hi Mario & Brof,

We are all in Nigeria.

We all use our PC. My PC is HP with 8GB Ram, 500GB Hard Disk, Corei7.

Our server is in Los Angeles.

Hi Brof and others,

if the crackling starts on screenshare/webcam activation you defenitely can asume the bandwith being the bottleneck.

Mostly this will be on the upstream side of the sharing user, but it also can be on the other side.

Let the users do a speedtest and have a look at their results.

You can lower the screensharing quality and webcam quality. Even you could lower the audio quality.

all the tuned audio settings are for good networks.

Zoom and other tools that use their own apps, rather than the webbrowser lower the bandwith on the fly so you get bad audio quality but no crackles.

I think BigBlueButton does this too but seems as if it does not work as fast? or effective - not sure how exactly this works - Paulo should be able to explain this more detailed?

If your network is good, you can achieve much better quality with BigBlueButton than with the other tools, on bad networks I can see problems with bbb too - at least on 2.2 - not sure if there are new calculations in 2.3?

cheers

Ping your server from your pc in cmd

C:/ ping bbbserver.com  -t

Pinging yourserver.com [18.196.14.206] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 18.19x.14.2xx: bytes=32 time=130ms TTL=44

Reply from 18.19x.14.2xx: bytes=32 time=119ms TTL=44

Reply from 18.19x.14.2xx: bytes=32 time=120ms TTL=44

Reply from 18.19x.14.2xx: bytes=32 time=123ms TTL=44

Watch this for one minute…

Every packet needs to be less then 200ms,  and if you see big swings in the time apacket takes that jitter.

You will also see lost packets with no reply.

I would expect you would have issues trying to host Nigeria users in the western US.

Aws is in Africa, and there are some dedicated server providers that are in country that some of my customers use.

Also ghana/ivory coast customers use European servers with good success.

You can also join a BBB meeting, and run this from same computer at same time, and observer when audio goes bad for you.

Last,  if you enable xml_cdr’s in freeswitch.  You can get the stats for each audio connection logged on server.

Regards,

Stephen

Hi dear odejinm and brof, hello from Russia.

We are trying to make bbb work for 5 month,

We have 20 programmers, 5 dedicated servers collocated at ISP monopolist with 1 Gbit internet symmetrical connection , we have made front, app android, app ios auto reboot of media server.

We cut the video quality, screen-share quality, fps. And after all this stuff, bbb still have problems with audio/video/screen-sharing, media servers, audio cracklings, jittering, video delay. Your program always will be compared to zoom, and zoom will always wins🙄

Please be advised, if you want to make commercial project, Do not use bbb.

Bbb only works with flawless internet connection.

Hi there,

you run BBB commercially on just 5 servers and then complain you cannot
compete with zoom?

Hey arekekhass , thanks for your feedback.

Could you record a session from your screen , so we can compare audio/video quality with our server ?

We run bbb every day on virtual machines with multiple users  from different locations and we don't have this kind of report from costumers. Audio and video work fine.

So i believe there's something missing between our comparisons. I would recommend you guys first trying to measure your audio/video quality here : https://demo.bigbluebutton.org

If you find any trouble, record an audio/video of the problem so we may be able to reproduce it here. If not , i believe you can start digging into your hardware / hypervisor specs. We have seen things like this happening on virtualized systems that has a bad configuration (I am not saying this is your case , but it is worthy to double check it).

Monitoring network status (packet loss, latency , jitter ) is also a good try to find what is happening.

Hope you guys can find a solution.

Hi Areke,

Thanks for your feedback.

I will like recap your position on BBB.

1. You meant BBB can not be compared to Zoom
2. Zoom is more powerful and stable than BBB
3. BBB is not good for commercials

Am I right?

Yep, absolutely.
And one more thing, in docs they mentioned “
We recommend that you have at least 500 KB/sec upstream and 1 MB/sec download bandwidth“. For the regions with DSL internet we made only one to one connections in bbb and decreased quality to 100 kb/sec, but it still lags and voice is not working properly.
This trouble may be comes with DSL modems or patch cords)) But zoom works there fine in one to many mode.
