Hi Robex,

The welcome message is specified using API when creating a meeting.
You can see the syntax for the welcome message here:

http://code.google.com/p/bigbluebutton/wiki/API#Create_Meeting_(create)

If you pass an empty string for the welcome message to create call,
then BigBlueButton will use the global welcome message, which is
defined in

/var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/bigbluebutton/WEB-INF/classes/bigbluebutton.properties

Here's the definition for the message on our demo server.

defaultWelcomeMessage=<br>Welcome to this BigBlueButton demo server.
This server is running <b>0.71-beta.</b><br><br>For help see <a
href="event:http://www.bigbluebutton.org/content/videos"><u>tutorial
videos</u></a> See also our <a
href="event:http://code.google.com/p/bigbluebutton/wiki/FAQ"><u>FAQ</u></a>.
After using this server, please <a
href="event:http://bigbluebutton.org/feedback"><u>give us your
feedback</u></a>.<br><br>To join the voice conference:<br> (1) click
the headset icon in the upper-left, or<br> (2) dial %%DIALNUM%% and
enter conference ID: %%CONFNUM%%.<br><br>

Hello Fred,
I would like to ask you how to change the welcome message without
using an empty
string. You said that BBB uses the global message if we pass an empty
string for the
welcome message to create call, so i would like to set a string but i
don't know how to
do this using API. I tried to initialize the variable $welcomeString
(bbb_api.php) but
nothing happened.

Hi Zanstro,

Your easiest path to changing the welcome message is to change the
source for the front-end .jsp pages on a BigBlueButton server.

It's not hard. See this FAQ:

http://code.google.com/p/bigbluebutton/wiki/FAQ#Can_I_run_multiple_virtual_classrooms_in_a_single_BigBlueButton

You'll see a variable called welcome. Another example, if you look at
the source for demo1.jsp, you'll see

// Request a URL to join a meeting called "Demo Meeting"
// Pass null for welcome message to use the default message (see
defaultWelcomeMessage in bigbluebutton.properties)
//
String joinURL = getJoinURL(request.getParameter("username"), "Demo
Meeting", null );

Change "Demo Meeting" to something else and you'll change the welcome
message. If you setup your own BigBlueButton server, you'll find
demo1.jsp located at

/var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/bigbluebutton/demo/demo1.jsp

Can you double-check that you are passing a value for the welcome parameter when you create the meeting.  See

Hi Fred,

Thanks for your quick reply. I have serious problem about the performance of the BBB server.
My manager wants to setup the BBB server for the 20-25 user can join at same time in same class. And the voice quality should be crystal clear.
Currently i have setup a BBB server on VM Ware But when mor ethan 7  or  8 student joins class. The voice quality degrade. Voice start Cracking.

My Current configuration of server is
 Intel(R)Xeon(R) CPU   3040 @ 1.86GHz 1.87 GHz
Ram 4.00 GB(3.50 GB Usable)
System Type 32-bit Operating System
Using VM Ware for the BBB setup.

Is it possible that 20 users can join The BBB Class. How can i achieve that.
Please Help me.

We recommend you run BigBlueButton on a dedicated server.

A virtualized BigBlueButton running within a Windows computer is a good development environment or test environment, but not appropriate for any real-world application.

Be sure you setup a server that has the minimal hardware requirements.  See FAQ for details.

Hi Dixon,

I go through the document. It is very well written. But still we can't afford quad-core processor. How much performance can be improved if i use Ubuntu 10.04 on the same machine. Is Ubuntu 10.04 is the best operating system.
My manager said me that if i  take responsibility that BBB server works fine at least 20 users then he can provide new processor.
Kindly suggest.
As for now i gonna install Ubuntu 10.04 for see the performance improvement.

Thanks

Hi Puneet,

My manager said me that if i  take responsibility that BBB server works fine at least 20 users then he can provide new processor.

It's worth pointing out that BigBlueButton is open source and comes WITHOUT WARRANTY.  The upcoming version 0.81 is licensed under the LGPL 3.0 (version 0.80 was LGPL 2.0).   See

If you are looking to achieve 20 users, the best way to test is to actually have 20 users use the server and judge if the actual experience meets your requirements.

You'll note we're not giving any guidance on how many users your setup will support -- in fact its difficult to give such guidance as each setup is different.  See

We recommend Ubuntu 10.04 (32-bit or 64-bit) as the host operating system.

Is there the way to set UTF8 encoding for Welcome message? I need to put same special characters, like: ł, ś, ć.

Hi Fred,
Sorry for that. I'm trying to enable cyrilic symbols in new meeting, but instad i get wrong encoding. I try UTF-8, and different KOI, but it can't help me. Maybe i need to add some line to bigbluebutton.properties file?
And here's a screenshot of what i get.

 Hi again, Fred,
i connect to my bbb server, via putty, run midmight commander, and go into

/var/lib/tomcat7/webapps/bigbluebutton/WEB-INF/classes/bigbluebutton.properties

i change bigbluebutton.properties string "welcome message", type prase in Russian,

#----------------------------------------------------
# Default welcome message to display when the participant joins the web
# conference. This is only used for the old scheduling which will be
# removed in the future. Use the API to create a conference.
defaultWelcomeMessage
=<br>Добро пожаловать в <b>%%CONFNAME%%</b>!<br><br>
defaultWelcomeMessageFooter
=Этот сервер разработан на основе BigBlueButton(c) </a>.

and run bbb-conf --clean.
Then i start new meeting, and see trouble with encoding.

I think there is a bug with the file encoding somewhere in bbb-web. When I put the text "Добро пожаловать в" into bigbluebutton.properties the text is messed up, but when I add the text to the create API call the text appears as expected. Is it possible that bbb-web isn't reading the .properties file as UTF-8?

Hello Fred,

I went into /var/lib/tomcat7/webapps/bigbluebutton/WEB-INF/classes and I see four files,

bigbluebutton.properties.swm

bigbluebutton.properties.swn

bigbluebutton.properties.swo

bigbluebutton.properties.swp

As far as I know, these are temporary files. I do not see a standalone bigbluebutton.properties. Can you please guide me what to do?

Maybe someone has it opened to be edited creating these temp files. Close those first and will probably save to bigbluebutton.properties.

Here's it's location in one of our servers.

Hi Fred

Now i'm using Bigbluebutton html5 version 2.2.0 beta. I tried to change default welcome message and tittle but i can not. In the bigbluebutton version 2.0 i can change it in :

- change welcome message : /usr/share/bbb-web/WEB-INF/classes/bigbluebutton.properties
- change title : /usr/share/meteor/bundle/programs/server/assets/app/config/settings-production.json

But in the version 2.2.0 beta i don't find these files.

Hope to hear you soon!

Thank you!
