I have a audio problem with BBB ... not working

BBB Session is recorded (but not processed during live session)

BigBlueButton Server 2.7.4 (550)
                    Kernel version: 5.4.0-164-generic
                      Distribution: Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS (64-bit)
                            Memory: 30806 MB
                         CPU cores: 8

The jitter level is high (125 ms and more 200ms )  :  with only 20 users

Hi Julian,

> I have a audio problem with BBB ... not working

What exactly is not working?  Is the audio not going through the live session, is the audio quality low, is the audio not being recorded?

Having one user with a high jitter is not unusual.

Regards,... Fred

poor audio quality

jitter is growing with users ... very few users

I have tested :
me -> demo.bigblubutton.org : jitter ok 50ms
me -> another server : jitter ok 40ms
me -> my bbb server 1 : jitter bad 185 ms (5 users !!)
me -> my bbb server 2 : jitter ok 60ms (10 users)
me -> my bbb server 3 : jitter bad 100 ms

the jitter amplify with bbb sessions (but with few users) ... I don't know exactly ???

Memory is ok 5G  used on 60G available
CPU 10 vcore

For example : jitter is 90ms on my bbb server with only 5 users.
And at the beginning the audio is bit slow "You are currently only ... in this conference"

another example :
no users on the bbb server and jitter 134 ms
welcome audio is cracky

replays are being processed  ... so maybe
during live sessions there is no replay processed

no user Capture d’écran du 2024-02-05 17-06-38.png

Hi Julian,

Can you try a test on

and let us know if you encounter the same issues.

Users use screensharing ? is it a potential problem ?

On an BBB server with only 1 user (me)

See below process ... many kurento media server ... normal or not ?
Just 1 user on the server ... !!

It seems that there is problem when screensharing is activated ... It's my feeling !!

Hi Julien,

> it seems that there is problem when screensharing is activated ... It's my feeling !!

Are you able to reproduce this with screen sharing on demo?

jitter is ok on demo server (35ms)

But I don't know why jitter is high on a server with no user (left) or 30 users on right / no replay processed

I have no idea what's going on ... what can impact the jitter ??

I have enabled recordFullDurationMedia=true because of 2.7.3 problem ...

Just noticed "TURN utilisé=Oui", which means true, so I believe Turn is messing with jitter.

Are these VMs?  With shared or dedicated cores?

You can look at the steal time in top to see if noisy neighbor VMs are impacting quality.

Also,   if you just   ping the bbb server from your user device,  and let it run do you see wide time differences in the responses,  the jitter is the difference between each time.
If there is wide swing the delay most likely in the network path from your device to server...    like over wifi router etc.

me -> my bbb server 1 : jitter bad 185 ms (5 users !!)

me -> my bbb server 2 : jitter ok 60ms (10 users)

me -> my bbb server 3 : jitter bad 100 ms

regards,

Stephen

I am creating a new VM, with a new install.
I was in IPV4 so I will test IPV6 communication in another datacenter ...

I will tell you what's going on

New BBB 2.7.4 install on a VM - 20.04 -  8 CPU / 24 Go memory / SSD Nvme
IPv6 enabled (that's new)
With IPV6 BBB installation is really smooth !!!

It seems more stable with the ping, hope it will be good for voice !
I am testing tomorrow this new configuration ...

I asked teacher to avoid screensharing if possible (teachers share pdf file through screensharing !!!)
I don't know if too much screensharing can be bad for bbb server ???

Hi Julien,

> I don't know if too much screensharing can be bad for bbb server ???

Screen sharing is not bad at all.  Mediasoup, the built-in WebRTC server, is very efficient.  But uploading the presentation does take much less bandwidth and you get all the built-in whiteboard tools for annotations.
