Upgrade from 2.2 to 2.3 - Ubuntu server upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04

Hi 

Just curious, in the document (https://docs.bigbluebutton.org/2.3/install.html#upgrading-from-bigbluebutton-22), 

It recommends to set a new server with Ubuntu 18.04 and move the recordings from old to new server. 

Question 1 :  Instead setting a new server and migrate the recordings, is that OK to just upgrade the existing Ubuntu server  from 16.04 to 18.04? 

Question 2 : Is that OK to upgrade to 20.04 right away? 

Can you help share some insights? I am not an ubuntu expert

Hi there,

It's not recommended to upgrade from 16 to 18 because bbb 2.3 might not work correctly. The best way is to clean install ubuntu 18 and than clean install bbb 2.3. You can temporarily move recordings to digitalocean, vultr or any provider that charges by hour, not monthly.

As for ubuntu 20, it's not oficially of supported OS so it's better to stay with Ubuntu 18 for 2.3 and upcoming 2.4 versions

follow up question...

If I set up a new server, that means I would have a new External IP and need to rengenerate sercrets stuff, is my understanding correct?

which i will need to re-integrate new IP and secret, right? 

I am using BBB with WordPress, I just hope to do this with minimum impact with my limited knowledge... I did this once when setting up BBB for the first time like 1y ago.. and that was my last time... I just managed to make it work based on the documents.. 

I am afraid I might not get the connection right...

If your server meets the minimum requirements

You should be able to install with bbb-install.sh in under 30 minutes.  See

Thank you for the info and encouragement. 

Just quick check... it recommends to transfer the recordings (https://docs.bigbluebutton.org/admin/customize.html#transfer-published-recordings-from-another-server). 

If i were to build a new server with ubuntu18, do I still need to transfer them before a start? 

plus, would it break something if I just make a copy of the recordings instead of transfering? 

something like below. 

Old ubuntu 16 with recording - use it for testing in future. 

New ubuntu 18 with recording - live site.

Hi,

I have done this upgrade recently without any issues using the same domain, changing the secret  to the used with 2.2 at the end of the 2.3 installation and finally bringing back the records previously backed up.
