This movie was shown today on Turner Classic Movies. Maybe still time
for west coast members to see. Worth looking for. It is a fine movie.

A couple lives dull lives until they expand their horizons. As an
example of the dull lives they lived , the movie shows they took
bicycle vacations.

I don't see any bicycle touring in the trailer, but the entire movie is on YouTube.

The amount of bicycle touring in the movie is not the point. The point
is that the movie wants to show a couple leading dull lives. They
decided that could be done by showing that the couple took bicycle
vacations. I believe it worked with the public. A number of people
asked me when bicycle touring why I did it. Some sort of fund raising
for charity? Riding long distances on a bicycle isn't rational is it?
You wouldn't take bicycle vacations if you had more money or were more
imaginative, would you?

I reject the movie-maker's premise. They are demonstrating their own dullness IMO

On my Route 66 tour, checking into a motel in Springfield, IL, the manager asked
what type of car I was driving since I left it blank on the form.

I said I had arrived by bicycle,... from Texas, on my way to Chicago.

"You don't have a car?"  -- Yes I do, at home.

"Couldn't afford a plane or bus ticket?" -- I could, but I wanted to ride.

"Why would you do that?" -- To see the country and ride Route 66.

"That's crazy." -- Yes, maybe so.

"Bicycle vacations" are not necessarily cheap.  Organized vacations with VBT or
Discovery Bikes or REI, etc... run thousands of dollars per person.

I'm not going to take much offense at a movie's backstory caricature of
bicycle vacations as boring. To each their own.

We went round a little bit once at the Canadian border crossing with the border agent. She wanted to know where the vehicle was carrying our gear and had trouble wrapping her brain around the thought that we had everything we need with us on the bikes!

 A number of people
asked me when bicycle touring why I did it. Some sort of fund raising
for charity?

When asked that question, I tell people I'm raising money for the Bob Fund.

Which is 100% deductible, unless you're audited.

On BikeCentennial 76 a man asked me if I wanted a ride?

I said "No thank you."

His response was "What is it with you people?"

In 77, I was riding from SF to LA. I needed some cash and stopped in at a bank in Watsonville. I didn't have a credit card or an ATM in those days. It was very hot and I wasn't wearing a shirt.

I went into the bank and a bank officer spotted me and I think she wanted to get me the hell out of the bank and opened up a new window for me. I wrote out a check for maybe $25 or $50 in those days.

She rudely told me "I'm going to have to call your bank."

When she came back her attitude had completely changed.

Yes, Mr. Immler. No, Mr. Immler.

Would you like an iced tea, Mr. Immler?

Can we get you a limo Mr. Immler?

When I got the next statement from my bank, there had been 7 million dollars in my account for about a week.

Unfortunately, a mistake.

For myself, I have to periodically remind myself that I am not in anyway superior to others because of my own eccentricities including doing unsupported bike touring.  Some of the biggest narcissists I know are bicyclists.  So I I try to stay humble and just say to myself, "different strokes for different folks".  I think we bike tourists, including myself, enjoy shocking the non-cyclists.  The look of disbelief is a bit of an ego boost.  I admit it.
Bicycle touring is a wonderful way to experience the world.  I love it.  And I enjoy the small notoriety I get within my little world.  I am glad to help people think about the possibilities of seeing the world in a different sort of way.
We are all "Legends in Our Own Mind".  We're all just kids on the playground.  Both trying to fit in, and setting ourselves apart.

I did go to Youtube and watched the movie which I enjoyed.  Robert Donat, Deborah Kerr,  Glynis Johns (still alive at age 99!) and a very lovely Ann Todd.  Donat was a great actor and unfortunately died in his 50s.  All fine British Actors...  In the UK the film was titled "Perfect Strangers"
