Can anyone describe the construction method used by Beneteau on the 2005 473 Oceanis clipper with teak decks?

Did Beneteau use any techniques that are now considered problematic?

I have a bit of a leak, and i can see several screws sticking up a bit through the teak seems…

  1. did they just do everything they would on any deck and then lay teak on it just cosemetically?  It is not the actual deck right?

  2. If it is just cosmetic did they use a lot of screws to hold it down while it dried to the glue?  If so, what did they do to make sure that the screw holes did not cause leaks?

Thank you for any information on this.

Hello:

I have a 2003 B473 too:)

I only have teak in my cockpit and swim platform.  It is all in pretty bad shape.  When I was treating it last the wood has worn down and it seems they used small nails in it.  As the teak has detreated the nails have protruded higher out of the teak.  Right now it is about a centimeter, and in some places 2 centimeters.  Enough to be seen and maybe cause a cut....  From what I was told at the factory they built the panels on a table then put them on the boat.  I would have just thought they would have glued them in place, so I am a little puzzled why the nails are there.  My plan is to remove my teak and replace it with PlasTEAK (www.plasteak.com).  When I priced it last summer it was about $85 per square foot, however the price may have gone up.  Attached is a layout for the cockpit and swim platform.

There are other products and I am still researching up to the day I decide to do it.  Hope this helps....

The teak pieces are individual pieces stapled (bronze staples) together to make the panel pieces. These are then glued down. I only know because I’ve had to redo.

Hi All,  I have the same problem with the teak on my 2007 B343.  I called Beneteau and they said they can cut panels for any Beneteau if you give them a serial number of the boat.   I am thinking of doing a replacement but I am having difficulty thinking about  what it takes to get the old panels off.

I took off the teak panel on my curved stern seat because it had partially delaminated. The best way according to my  dealer was progressively larger putty knives. Gently prying to break the bond between the teak and fiberglass. Over the years B used different adhesives, but they are something like 3M 4200. If you are slow and lucky you will get an entire section off in one piece. If not you have a sloppy job of removing pieces. B recommends their dealers reinstall with 3M 5200, with lots of weights to hold in place while curing. The edge, black, seal can be done with black life caulk.
Good luck
Ron

Hi Tim,

Have the same problem with the teak seats on my 2001 36 CC, just wondering if Beneteau gave you an estimate on the cost (realizing the cost would be higher for a larger boat (hopfully) as I was considering replacing with them a synthetic material but this may be a viable alternative.

But I would like real teak if possible.

Thanks,

Kevin

I got the information from Beneteau Parts USA, a few years ago.  I think I remember the price to be around $1800 USD,

Wow—thanks Timothy—that is good information—mine are screwed down—the screws are short—i pulled less than 4 square feet—at least 50 screws—and i did not even get to pulling the wood—which i am leaving in place for now…
