My Oceanis 473 has an anchor locker with a surprisingly large opening facing to the bow of the boat.  When water crashes over the bow, considerable water goes into the anchor well.  With mud, chain, etc., possibly blocking the discharge holes, the water can stay there longer than one would hope and would probably continue to build in rough seas.

Has anyone figured out a way to minimize the size of the opening?

Thanks!

Just flush it out regularly preferably with fresh water, even water until you can hose it down with fresh water.

Do you have 2 drain holes? Do you have plastic drainhole covers?

Thanks, John.  I do have two drain holes, but not the covers.  Does Beneteau make them, or do I need to create something myself?

Probably made in Asia. Your Beneteau Parts Distributor should carry them.

You can always get a couple of clam-shells at a Marine Store, looks better if the holes are covered up.

Please take care.

The covers (at least on my 31) do not hold up well to UV. Mine disintegrated after a few years in the Texas sun. I was able to get replacements via the spareparts site a while back, before the service interruption.

Good to know....

Over the the years they may go brittle, but the boat is now 10 years old and zero issue.

However on Vancouver Island the weather isn't like it is in Texas.

I think I misunderstood.  The discussion seems to be about exterior covers, which I do have and they are aluminum, I believe.  I thought you were talking about covers inside the locker to keep debris away from the drain holes.

Do you have salt water pump and hose?

I find it difficult to do when the wind is blowing while lifting 140' of chain + rode.

We kept a plastic bucket tied on a line in the anchor hold. A couple of bucket to wash off the anchor and a couple in the hold to clean the chain.

I do the same....gets pretty muddy from time to time.

Bucket thing works well, always have a large towel ready to stop muddy water running aft of the anchor well..( I'm on the Anal side )

I’ve got a 12v water pump in the chain locker ,drop the pickup with. Weight over the side with a wash down hose saves a lot of work and mess in the locker

I have seen this (mass water intrusion)  lead to problems in Ocean races (once on a J-120) - from now on, I am going to try and block the big hole in heavy seas - with what I dont know...

Thanks, Rick.  That was exactly my concern.  It's a huge opening with drains that are tiny by comparison.
