Winner of the 2025 Into the Forest Bell Tree Composition Contest, "The Way Back Home" is an exuberant and joy-filled romp that propels the listener ever onward toward home.

The contrast between the syncopated, mostly malleted bass line, the bell tree melody, and the countermelody played on chimes is simply stunning, making this a fabulous choice for concerts with a 'home' theme or for a worship service on Homecoming Sunday.

Written for bell tree solo and full handbell choir, this piece is composed so that no duplicate bells are needed: the bell tree ringer uses C6 to C7, the choir uses C4-B5 handbells (opt C3-B4) and C4-C7 chimes (opt C3-G3 & D7-C8).

by Sondra K. Tucker

This spirited piece for bell tree and handbell choir does not require any duplicate bells; in fact, much of the handbell choir part is played on chimes. A winner of the 2021 Into the Forest Bell Tree Composition Contest, "Air and Hornpipe" is perfect for a level 2 to 3 choir and a bell tree ringer with basic bell tree experience desiring a bit of a challenge as it is recommended that the bell tree part be memorized.

by Michael Mazzatenta

No duplicate bells are needed to play this original composition. A winner of the 2021 Into the Forest Bell Tree Composition Contest, "Gladness and Grace" is written to be played using only one set of bells (3-5 octaves) and one 3 octave set of handchimes. The handbell choir part is well within the reach of level 2 to 3 choirs while the bell tree part is playable for a relatively new bell tree ringer.

A Bell Tree “Keyboard” Manual

The purpose of this "how-to" manual is to provide an opportunity for the ringer to play the bell tree keyboard by following the steps in the manual. It is not intended to be a manual to teach basic music reading. It is for the ringer who would like to explore a different aspect of ringing. A "keyboard" setup is not needed for every piece of bell tree music played; however, you can use the bell tree keyboard concept as a starting point. The more connections you can make to a standard set up, the quicker the learning process becomes.

Air and Hornpipe

by Sondra K.

Gladness and Grace

by Michael Mazzatenta

I thought they were going to publish more than the winner, though - a friend and I entered the contest (my piece got absolutely roasted by the judges, lol) and I thought that the two runners up would be published as well? Was really hoping for more choir + tree pieces to enter the repertoire, as it's less scary than being a soloist with just a piano (in my opinion, anyway).

Only the winner is published as part of the competition. Additional contestants are encouraged to seek publication in hopes that several will. The purpose of these composition contests is to make more BT & Choir music available.
