Hey, 

is is it possible we could get a slack channel going?

What are the advantages of Slack over IRC?

While Slack is certainly well polished, unless you're able to pay, it
looks like it has some notable limitations - most importantly, you
can't provide guest access. I'm certainly not in a position to fund it
myself.

It also looks a little awkward if you need to be in multiple
"organisations" at once - I've got a Slack account for my work with
DjangoGirls, but it isn't obvious to me that I can be signed into both
DjangoGirls and a second account at the same time. By contrast, you
can join as many IRC channels as you want.

Don't get me wrong - I don't especially like IRC - but it looks like a
better option to me at the moment.

Yeah the only positive I was going to highlight is IRC doesn't have an archive and I am not on IRC all the time nor can I get notifications for anything said on IRC.

Slack is free the last time I checked.

Just tossing out ideas - Maybe Gitter would be a better choice in that regard? Gitter offers similar funcionalities, but with unlimited archieve (AFAIK) for open sourced projects. Might not be the perfect choice since it is project-basd, not org-based (chatrooms based on GitHub orgs are possible, but that would be another thing), but aside from that it's pretty suitable.

This could be an awesome idea, who would have to setup the chatrooms? I could do it, but I do not have seniority in this project.

Slack is free the last time I checked.

It's free - with conditions. There is a no cost tier, but you have to be specifically invited into the organisation to be able to join the chatroom. 

In contrast, anyone can join an IRC room as long as they have a nick; logging and notifications are a function of your client. If you're on OS/X, download Textual from the app store - it will give you logs and notifications. I've also put in a request for botbot.me to start logging the channel.

I've taken a look at gitter - while it looks like it's also free, it isn't clear to me that anyone can join - the suggestion is that you need to be part of a Github organisation to join that organisation's rooms. I've created a PyBee channel (https://gitter.im/pybee) - let me know if you can join it.

Being "project-based" doesn't strike me as a huge problem either - it's a little inconvenient right now, because there's more projects in BeeWare than there are developers, but on the upside, it means that there is a "right place" to discuss OS/X widgets without offending the GTK people; Toga discussions won't collide with Cricket discussions, and so on. That said, I'm damned if I can work out how to create a room based on a PyBee organisation - the only options I have are for my own personal repositories.

You’re right, organisation chatrooms can not be public (can be joined freely). Also there seems to be a limit for logs in free organisation rooms, IIRC. It does seem possible to create a public, non-project-based, room, however:

1. In the main window, click “Create a room” at the bottom left.

2. Choose “Channel”.

3. Select an owner (choose PyBee here?), and choose “Public”.

4. Create.

I tried one of my organisation accounts, and this seems to work.

Ok - that seemed to work; I've just created a pybee/developers channel that should be public - lets see how well this works.
