Hi All,

I found this fella just hanging out in one of my Bee Hotels in Manhattan/NYC yesterday. Can someone give me a possible ID? It was alive, but not moving much. Curious! (and adorable!).

Thanks,
Kim

Hi! It looks like a potter wasp, subfamily Eumeninae of family Vespidae. They're cute! Hard to tell what genus from here.

Hi Kimberley,

Yes, she's a potter wasp and, from the facial/thorax markings, it looks like it could be the big black and white one that comes out in mid-late summer, Pseudodynerus quadisectus.  Great insects, they pollinate plants and control caterpillars, super mellow and love to nest in bee hotels and our deck chairs!

Cheers,

Jim
