I have been using kmymoney for as long as I can remember.  There's a lot about it I like, and a lot I don't.

I really like everything I read about beancount.  And fava seems like an excellent interface.

Here's my first question (of possibly many): how can either bean-web or fava display the running balance.  I'm used to seeing the running balance for an account for every transaction.  I auto generate all of my expected income, bills and estimated misc expenses a few months into the future, to see how that balance changes.  I don't see any (obvious) way to see what the running balance is on any given line.

Also, what is the point of the explicit "balance" lines?  E.g.
2015-01-26 balance Assets:US:BofA:Checking        3254.98 USD

Hi, welcome aboard!

In Fava, when you click on an account, you will see a list of all transactions involving that account, including a running balance.

See for example: http://fava.pythonanywhere.com/example-beancount-fava-12-2017-02-08-pypi/account/Assets:US:BofA:Checking/

If necessary, you can also filter these results (I too have transactions in the future, do I usually filter on year-to-date)

Balance lines are a way to assert the balance of an account at a certain point in time. For example, I input my bank-transactions about once a month. I start with setting a balance assertion at the start of this process, so I can be sure I don't miss anything.

Also, occasionally I forget to change the date when I copy-paste a transaction. Balance assertions usually catch those issues as well.

Having said that, they're entirely optional.

Ahh, interesting.  It wasn't obvious how to get to the account screen you linked to.  I saw the basic Journal... from there, I seem to be able to click on a balance assertion for the account in question, and then it filters to just that account, and does show the running balance.

Actually, I now see I can select that account from several different screens, all leading me to the same place.  This is perfect.

I like the filtering capabilities of fava.  This is far better (and actually somehow simpler) than everything else I've used.

Thanks a million for the quick, helpful answer.
