USB not recognized

Hello,

I'm not able to see the BeagleBone Blue as a mass storage device or USB network.  I've been following along the "Getting Started" page and updated system firmware to Debian 9.2 2017-10-10 4GB SD IoT as shown in the latest images page.  I've tried this on a Window 7 and on a Mac with OSX Sierra.

I'd like to be able to ssh via USB as a backup to the WiFi interface.  I am able to ssh via WiFi.

Any recommendations on what I should try next?  Any suggestions are appreciated.
