Overlays: pinmux needs to be referenced to be activated / is bone-pinmux-helper required?

Considering:

Eg. 1 BB-BONE-CRYPTO-00A0.dts [1]: pinmux cryptocape_pins is defined but not referenced elsewhere on the file.

Eg. 2 BB-PWM0-00A0.dts [2]: pinmux pinctrl_spec is referenced explicitly with a bone-pinmux-helper.

What is the right way to do it or do any of this examples have an issue?
