Extra Grounding

I think I'm having grounding issues with some power supplies I'm using. The power supply is a 5v barrel connection. Works great 99% of the time. If I want to add an extra ground to the beaglebone can I simply connect the ground that is connected to the barrel connection to Pin 1 and 2 (DGND) or will that not work as a backup ground? Or would I need to connect to the tp8 pin? The tp8 pin isnt ideal as the connection would have to be soldered.
