I just tried booting a brand-new BBB with 4D Systems 7" cap touch LCD cape. I get this with the BBB-blank-debian-8.10-lxqt-4gb-armhf-2018-03-06-4gb.img image. The checksum and Etcher verification both passed.

This is ^^ too old, you need to use the U-Boot overlay path for any LCD..

Hold the boot select button down, or force a u-boot upgrade via:

https://elinux.org/Beagleboard:BeagleBoneBlack_Debian#U-Boot_Overlays
Wait a minute:, that's not
BBB-blank-debian-8.10-lxqt-4gb-armhf-2018-03-06-4gb.img

Whatever you are actually running is really old.

It was really confusing. I put the Jessie lxqt flasher on the SD card, and that’s what I got (the BBB eMMC had something from 2016 on it).

I was able to get the latest-releases stretch from 2018-01-28 (?) to load just fine (never once tried the boot button).
