BBB gpio inputs from 3V3 power

Hi,
I am new to BBB world, excuse me if my questions are crazy
I understand the BBB gpio inputs are designed  for 3V3 supply (except few Analogue inputs with 1.8V)

What will happen if i connect to 5V  by accidental, a gpio_input to 5Volts through a 1K resister, ,   () 5v<--/\/\/\/\/\/-> gpio-input

It's damaged, while some parts may 'work' eventually, it'll completely fry..
