TightVNC mapping issue

Downloaded the latest Debian image(Stretch) and when I VNC to BBB, the keyboard mapping is completely off.  I did some searching and it appears this is a known issue with TightVNCserver.  Should TI be putting a different VNC server with their Debian version or is there a workaround?  As it is, VNC is unusable with QT5 programs and QT Terminal is the terminal program packaged here.  I am having to do terminal work thru SSH right now due to this.

Any ideas on how to resolve are greatly appreciated.  I would love to just download a new vnc server; however, since Chrome isn't working and apt-get isn't working per my other post, i don't know how to get anything else installed.
