Hi - I noticed that a file put on disk is reflected inside a project folder automatically, but a .pdf put on disk is not recognized inside project folder (it basically does not show at all). Is this expected, and can we change this behavior?

Also, is there a cleaner way to import external non-text files into a project folder?

Thanks.

The basic rules is that only files that BBEdit can edit (or at least render) will appear in the project sidebar.

PDF files used to appear in the side bar. As far as I was concerned, it was a bug, not a feature. You couldn't do anything with them from BBEdit, and if you clicked one by mistake, BBEdit would beachball for about 20 seconds before displaying the raw internal code of the PDF in the editor window.

I breathed a sigh of relief when they went away.

Yes, this is the expected behavior.

If you go to the trouble of adding a (non-text) file directly to
a project, BBEdit presumes you have some specific reason for
doing so, whereas by default BBEdit will display only editable
(text) files within folders.

You can however tell BBEdit to display all files within a
project's file list (rather than only text files), by clicking
on the magnifying glass at the bottom of the list, and
selecting "Everything" under "Show" in the resulting popup..

Alternatively, you can make BBEdit recognize files of any
specific type ("*.foo") as text by adding a suitable suffix
mapping (e.g. "foo" to "Text File") in the Languages prefs panel.

[*Note* I strongly recommend you only add such a mapping if the
unknown file actually contains editable text, e.g. please do
_not_ use this option on PDFs, images, or other binary data.]

Since I'm not sure what "clean" implies here, may I ask what
you're trying to accomplish?

[PS: A great deal of this info is also available within the
included PDF manual, which is available at any time via Help ->
User Manual. :-) ]

I missed this before but just to clarify, BBEdit does not _sync_
files into a project; rather, the files remain exactly where
they are and you're just adding references to them.

The magnifying glass button solved my issue. "Show everything" now lists both .txt and .pdf files in the project folder. Clicking the .pdf directly opens the pdf in Preview, which is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!

Regarding importing files "cleanly", my scenario is this:
1) I have a xyz.pdf on Desktop.
2) I would like to bring it into a project folder.
3) Currently, I can drag the file and bring it into the BBEdit project folder. The file link is stored in the folder, but the actual file is not copied into the folder. The link points to the file on Desktop.
I wanted to check if while doing 3), there is some option available to "copy" the file in project folder.

Regards.

OK, good to hear and you're welcome!

Thanks for the clarification and this is not something projects
do -- please see my post just prior to this one. :-)
