I work on several computers. Ideally I'd sync preferences via something like Dropbox. But I'd understand if files have to be copied manually.

Found this. I'll try it but if there's a better approach, please let me know.

Page 40 of the Users Manual. Part of the Installing BBEdit.
Starts out about using Dropbox for shared preferences. Or the next page about sharing through your iCloud Drive.

BBEdit has you covered. See the manual, chapter 2 ("Sharing Application Support & Preferences Data via Dropbox")

well... there's this cryptic paragraph about "seeding preferences"... not clear to me what I should do.

I have followed directions on my main workstation. I would think that I now should:
  1.  log on my other machines,
  2.  turn off DropBox sync
  3.  delete the preference folder from my user's "application support/bbedit"
  4. rename and move the preference data
  5. turn on DorpBox sync
  6. start BBEdit
Right?

No. :-)

Once Dropbox has transferred the contents of your BBEdit app
support folder to your other Macs, you need only quit & relaunch
BBEdit on those machines and it should automatically recognize
and use the app support folder contained within Dropbox.

The only potential complication is whether you also wish to
share BBEdit's _prefs data_ via Dropbox; I prefer not to myself
but that's up to you and the instructions describe the necessary
steps if you do.

Apart from my prior message, 'seeding' refers to copying
BBEdit's actual _preference settings_[1] from one machine to
another, since as things stand (and as described in that same
paragraph ;-), it is not possible to sync an application's prefs
settings via Dropbox/et al.

================
[*Note* Since the system does not support relocation of an
application’s core preferences data file
(/Users/<username>/Library/Preferences/com.barebones.bbedit.plist),
you cannot directly sync these settings. You may, however, copy
BBEdit’s core preferences file to other machines to 'seed'
them with your preferred preference settings.
================

[1: These settings correspond to the options presented in
BBEdit's Preferences window, apart from key shortcuts which are
stored outboard in the app support folder and thus can be
directly shared.]

hmmm.... Could you expand a bit on what is in the "_prefs data_" file? I don't understand why I would *not* want to sync preferences across machines

Please see the section "BBEdit Preferences Folder" (page 39 of
the current manual), and the reason one might _not_ want to sync
this info is due to its "data" aspect.
