Hi and good day everyone,

My file is myfile.html

My intention is only to work on & edit the myfile.html on the local drive. Then I upload with CTRL - CMD - S.

However, BBEdit has by now opened 3 files of myfile.html from the server. They are probably the same file. (I clicked on one and all 3 were gone, thankfully :-)

So it happens I’m updating something on the file and can’t find the edit, because the edit happened in one of the server files.

How does BBEdit handle the different file  versions: on local drive/ on the server?

/

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

With best regards,

Omar KN

In this case, BBEdit is doing what you've told it to do. :-)

The shortcut of Command-Control-S corresponds to the 'Save to FTP/SFTP Server...' command, which will cause BBEdit to a) save the current file to the specified remote server and then b) to keep working with that file _on the remote server_.

If you instead wish to keep your edits local and only save changes to the server at specific points, you can instead use the 'Save a Copy to FTP/SFTP Server...' command (with default shortcut of Command-Option-Control-S) which as its name indicates, will _save a copy_ of the active file to the remote server but leave the original where it is.

[PS: For complete details on working with remote files, please see the section titled "Accessing FTP/SFTP Servers" in Chapter 3 of the included PDF manual, which also contains a great deal of useful info about all of BBEdit's other workings. ;-) You can access the manual at any time by choosing Help -> User Manual.]
