I wanted my Scratchpad to be the same across several computers, my initial thought was to put it on my server, and copy an alias of the file to: "~/Library/Application Support/BBEdit/". This seems to work fine... and now I am considering moving everything in that folder to the server so my BBEdit environment is the same on each machine.

What happens when I am out with my laptop and not connected to my server? Is there a better way to do this? Perhaps I have finally found a use for iCloud?

Then I spied this in the manual... "If you have not previously used iCloud Drive to share your BBEdit app support folder, we recommend you instead use Dropbox for this purpose (if possible)".

Why? I know iCloud is a bit of a cluster**** (which is why I've never used it), but besides that is there anything else I need to be aware of?

It would be bad. "Try to imagine all life as you know it
stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body
exploding at the speed of light."

iCloud is not reliable for the intended purpose.

If you want to share your application support data across
multiple computers, Dropbox is the solution that we recommend
and support.

Someday I'll look back on all this and laugh... until they

This might pose some problems for people who use Dropbox at the “basic” level, as the author of this article explains. That certainly is not the fault of BBEdit, only a limitation from the people who run Dropbox.

That is very outdated information. iCloud has been rock solid for at least the last two years.

However, the way iCloud works means that it can offload files at any time, and that is not really compatible with storing App preferences. Dropbox is the way to go for storing app prefs, no iCloud. Similarly, do not enable Dropbox’s SmartSync not he BBEdit prefs folder.
