When I use BBedit, it lists the currently open files on the left hand side. If I quit BBedit from the BBedit menu, the next time I open it, the currently open files from then previous session are displayed. However, if I close BBedit by clicking on the Red button in the left-hand top corner, it prompts me to save any unsaved files and then when I open BBedit again, the previous currently open files list is no longer displayed.

I would like to either: 1) change the behavior of BBedit so that closing it using the Red button doesn't cause it to remove all files from the currently open files list, or 2) figure out where in the BBedit configuration data the list of currently open files are listed, so I can save  the list. The second option would allow me to restore the currently open files list in case I mistakenly use the Red button to close BBedit.

BBEdit is a Mac application, and so you can have multiple windows open; and closing a single window does not automatically quit the application. So if you have a window with multiple documents in it, and you click the red close button, you're telling the application that you want to close all of the documents in that window.

You can use "Save as Project", which will create a BBEdit project document containing all of the files currently open in the window.

Thanks for the reply. I am not sure I understand your explanation. When I quit BBedit from the BBedit menu, all of the windows are closed. However, when I then start BBedit again, all of the previously open documents appear on the left hand panel. When I use the red button on the upper left hand part of the BBedit window and reopen BBedit, none of the files that appeared in the left hand panel are shown.

Also, I am not sure what "Save as Project" does. I don't want a document that merges all of the files currently open in the window. I just want the left hand panel to show all of the files that were open before I closed the application. Is this what happens when I use "Save as Project"?

Greetings all. I do not want to complicate things, however, I have something similarly related to this issue, but I have been reluctant and afraid to ask because I have a feeling is silly.

Most of the time I have three to four BBEdit windows open with 10+ files open in each.
When I shut down the computer with these windows open. Sometimes on a restart the three or four BBEdit windows open with the files. Other times BBEdit opens to a blank single page.

When I shut down BBEdit before shutting off the computer, the same hit-and-miss. Sometimes the windows come back and sometimes it is just a single blank page when I restart BBEdit.

I have not found the sauce for it to consistently restart with the windows and files I had when I shut down.

I apologize if I complicated or diluted this topic, but I felt it was similar.

This is the expected behavior, since when you quit any app -- including BBEdit -- that naturally means its windows must close too. :-)

However, *because* you quit BBEdit itself rather than closing individual windows, when you relaunch the app, it will 'remember' all previously open windows and restore them.

> When I use the red button on the upper left hand part of the BBedit window and reopen BBedit, none of the files that appeared in the left hand panel are shown.

This is because when you click the red ("Close") button, you are telling BBEdit "I am done with all the documents *in this window* and don't need them anymore, so please close them", and BBEdit will do so; however, this action has no bearing on any *other* windows which may be open.

The easiest way to obtain the behavior you want is to just quit the app (via File -> Quit or Command-Q) *without* closing any windows beforehand. :-)

For reference, this misbehavior is not directly related to the prior inquiry; it is instead the result of an OS issue which sometimes manifests upon system restarts.

To the current poster and anyone else who may have encountered this issue, the best way to avoid it is to explicitly quit BBEdit before restarting your machine (whether doing an OS update or just a normal restart).

Finally, as a general request for everyone out there:

Thanks for the explanation. I think I see the reason BBedit doesn’t reopen all of the files in the currently open files list when the red button is clicked. And I usually use File -> Quit to end my BBedit session. However, I sometimes get busy and forget to do that, instead clicking the red button. I then lose all of the currently open files.

Is there is some place the list of currently open files are stored, e.g., somewhere in the BBedit configuration data, and would it be possible to save this file and then restore it to the configuration data? This would allow me to get back to a state where it would take less time reopening files when I mistakenly click the red button. I literally have 40-50 files open and to manually reopen those files takes a great deal of time. If I could save the list and restore it, it would reduce the amount of time it takes to get back to where I was before I erroneously clicked the red button.

Thanks,

Dan

Even if you do click the "Close" button, BBEdit should still warn you before closing a window which contains multiple documents; so, may I ask whether this is *not* happening?

I regret there is not.

That’s one of the uses of Projects.

I have several sets of specific files that go together for my different development and data analysis projects. Each set of files (worksheets, scripts, data files, configs, etc) is listed in a Project. Some files are in more than one project. The files are not moved or duplicated to put them “in” a project. Some of my projects have hundreds of files (in folders and subfolders, all of which are accessible in the sidebar if needed.

If I close a project window by clicking the red button, when I re-open that project file states are the same - opened as before or not.

When I click the red button, a window appears asking me if I want to save those files that are not yet saved.

OK, that's what should happen and if you then click the "Cancel" button in the alert, that will stop the window from closing.
