malformed text error in js file

The erorr is:

The input text is malformed - if Unicode or UTF-8 text, it may have been modified by a non-Unicode-savvy tool (macOS error code: -8739).

It may have been from adding an emoji, but I've never had this problem in the past. I saved my work, but it did not save the changes! It did not ask if I wanted to save changes after I closed it, so I lost work unfortunately. I can open it, but not save any changes. Please assist.
