I get a very dark color for the selected text, BBEdit 13, MAC OS Catalina, Mac Pro.
And I cannot find where to change it to something that keeps the text legible.

Have you tried "Text Colors" in the preferences. It looks like you have
a color scheme with a custom highlight color set.

I think there’s a bug, too. When BBEdit remains open and you switch between light and dark appearance a lot, the selection background color “sticks” at the setting for the dark appearance theme. Restarting BBEdit will fix it.

Good afternoon Patrick!

I have long not dared to ask the following question for fear of receiving a gentle reminder…

How can I convert

Here is The Title of a book published in 2009

to this

Here is The Title of a book published in 2009

by selecting The Title of a book and hitting hardly any keys at all?

There are of course a whole pile of other codes that I would like to apply by a similar short-cut process.

But could I be expressing here, in public, a need for technical support?

No, since this question is not a support matter. :-)

Task-related inquiries are always fair game here, though we _do_
encourage posting unrelated issue(s) in their own separate thread(s).
