editorconfig usage

I've a directory with source files created by windows, so the charset is Windows Latin 1 (1252). I've created .editorconfig in this directory with the command:

root = true

charset = latin-1

(I've tried also with latin1, windows latin 1 and so on...)

When I open the directory into bbedit, the charset setup seems ignored and the charset of each file is been auto detected.

What I miss?
