Hi all,

Thanks for setting up this SIG, definitely see some great things coming down the pipeline! As someone who is trying to evaluate Bazel to replace Make at my job, I've definitely run into some issues and see quite a few ways of doing the same thing. I feel like a chat group may be a good way to ask questions / post links and get more users ramped up. To that end, I've set up a Slack community group called BazelBuild with a #python channel in it which could be used similarly to IRC (there is no Python Bazel IRC channel AFAICT and it seems like people nowadays don't seem to IRC as much). Ping me for an invite if you're interested (https://bazelbuild.slack.com). Once you're in, feel free to invite more members of the community. If this isn't a good idea, let me know!

Hey Christian,

Irrespective of whether or not people on this SIG decide to jump to Slack, can you make the Slack channel open-for-all (instead of pinging you personally for a join request)? This SIG, like bazel-dev and other Bazel related mailing lists, are open groups and thus inherently much more accessible to everyone than this Slack channel.

Hi Naresh,

The dynamics of Slack are such that you need to get invited (see for
example: https://kubernetes.slack.com/). Once you're in you can invite
others though so I wouldn't be a SPOF. Hope that makes sense.

Ah, my bad. I've noticed a lot of public Slack channels have invite pages (like https://slack.cncf.io/) and it seems like they are all using Slackin to do that: https://github.com/rauchg/slackin. It looks like a one-time setup and the benefits are pretty nice (one click sign-ups).

You may also wish to look at gitter.im as an alternative. It's is open for anyone to join without inviters, open source, and integrates fairly nicely with GitHub. The Rust community has been using it recently, and several other communities do as well.

I really don't like the overhead of having the slack invites.

The google group is fine, imo.  I'm not opening 2 things when I already have 1.  This is just a distraction.
