Bazel Rules Author SIG Proposal: Sponsor Work on Updating Renovate to Support Bzlmod

Problem

Many Bazel workspace maintainers rely on Renovate to keep their external dependencies up-to-date with the latest compatible release. Unfortunately, Renovate does not currently support  Bazel modules (bzlmod). A tracking Issue has been created on the Renovate GitHub repo. Rhys Arkins, the primary maintainer, commented that they have no plans to implement bzlmod support. However, it appears that they are open to external contributions.

Given that the Renovate service is an integral part of the Bazel ecosystem, I believe that it is in the best interest of the Bazel Rules Authors SIG to help implement bzlmod support.

Proposal

I propose that the Bazel Rules Authors SIG approve the implementation of bzlmod support in Renovate as a sponsored (i.e., bounty) work item.

In addition, I am willing to develop a design and implement support for bzlmod in Renovate. Assuming that the BRA SIG approves this proposal, I can get started as early as next week.

Call to Action

Usually, approval of sponsored work items occurs at the bi-weekly BAR SIG meeting. In the interest of time, I hope that we can discuss and approve this work via this Google Group thread.

Spending some SIG budget on moving Renovate ahead sounds good to me, I think it's valuable and is clearly within the SIG's charter.
