Hi,

I am using Bareos 19.2.7-2 for backup my VMware 6.7.0 but the performance is very slow, about 10MB per second

I run the bareos-sd and bareos-fd in the same physical host, my job configuration is

Job {
  Name = "VMWARE-SRV-DC02"
  Client=srv-backup04-fd
  JobDefs = "DefJobsVMWARE"
  FileSet = "VMWARE-SRV-DC02"
  Storage = backup-vmware
}

FileSet {
  Name = "VMWARE-SRV-DC02"

  Include {
    Options {
         signature = MD5
         Compression = LZO
    }
    Plugin = "python:module_path=/usr/lib64/bareos/plugins/vmware_plugin:module_name=bareos-fd-vmware:dc=DC NAME:uuid=XXXXXXXXX:vcserver=vcenter01.domain.local:vcuser=backu...@vsphere.local:vcpass=SECRET"
  }
}

I checked the performance write sin bareos-sd , about 600MB per sec.

I checked the latency, loss between bareos-sd/fd and the physical vmware nodes using iperf and all sounds good, around 100MB per second no loss.

Please any suggest for checking ?

Thanks,

Rodrigo

i have no suggestion, so far, but i can tell you that im facing almost the same problems as you do.

My system should deliver much more than i get.

As we don't have any reports on VMware performance issues please provide
information according to bugs.bareos.org.

Thanks:

Hi again.

I don't know if the problem is vmware plugin, but it looks like.

My enviroment is a vmware cluster and, on the other hand, one server with Proxmox VE running bareos director and bareos storages and only this. This server has 24 x Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2640 0 @ 2.50GHz (2 Sockets) and 64GB RAM.

When i do the backups, all works fine, but the transfer rate is so poor, about 300kB/s. I do iperf tests and all works fine on my network and disks.

I try everything that my brain permits:

- With data spooling. without.
- Mounting disks with noatime
- Changing encription
- Changing compression to all types
- Without compression: Here we go, without compression, transfer rate ups to acceptable values (40-50MB/s). I thought could be the CPU performance, as obvious, so i put many cores and RAM to the machine with no results. (Later i discover that compression is done only for 1 CPU in any case). Then, i tried to move the client to the vmware cluster, because is more powerful. No results. Then, I moved the entire director with no results either.
- I try with a Windows client, without vmware plugin: With compression, the transfer rate is about 12MB/s. Isn't the best, but better.

I have to say i have others bareos virtualized enviroments with correct performance.
Other thing is breaking my brain, is: when the backup starts, starts about 20MB/s (seconds) and is going down until stands on 300KB/s, like a buffering problem or bottle neck, but i don't find where.

I'm desperate... Anybody can recommend something else to check??
