installation of bareos fails

Dear all

I am trying to reinstall bareos on my machine but the bareos packages are not found

1) I have added the bareos repo to /etc/apt/source.lists.d/bareos.list:

deb http://download.bareos.org/bareos/release/latest/xUbuntu_18.04/ /

2) I have removed /var/lib/apt/lists

3) Then regenerated the package lists:

root:~#apt-get update
OK:1 http://download.bareos.org/bareos/release/latest/xUbuntu_18.04  InRelease
OK:2 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic-security InRelease                                            
OK:3 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic InRelease

OK:5 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic-backports InRelease

4) The bareos packages cannot be found .         
root:~# apt-get install bareos bareos-database-mysql
Paketlisten werden gelesen... Fertig
Abhängigkeitsbaum wird aufgebaut.      
Statusinformationen werden eingelesen.... Fertig
Paket bareos-database-mysql ist nicht verfügbar, wird aber von einem anderen Paket
referenziert. Das kann heißen, dass das Paket fehlt, dass es abgelöst
wurde oder nur aus einer anderen Quelle verfügbar ist.

E: Paket bareos kann nicht gefunden werden.
E: Für Paket »bareos-database-mysql« existiert kein Installationskandidat.

Dear all

I have found out that my machine has a 32 bit architecture and that ubuntu is no longer supporting  32bit architectures of x86. I don't know apt too well, and I have the suspicion that apt indeed does not find the 32bit version  of the bareos package in the bareos repository.

How can I verify this?

I have this case on one of my systems. I'm running Ubuntu 18.04 on that system using the following source:

deb http://download.bareos.org/bareos/release/latest/xUbuntu_16.04 /

I am going to be replacing this system with a 64-bit OS as soon as I have the time.

If you execute "apt search bareos-director", you should see results with "i386" in them. These are the 32-bit packages.

thank you for you reply. I have include the repository for 18.04 in the apt package system, i.e.I added

deb http://download.bareos.org/bareos/release/latest/xUbuntu_18.04 /

to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/bareos.list

An apt search seems to return only 64 bit package. So I assume that the repository for 18.04 does not host any 32bit packages.

root:/usr/local/sbin# apt search bareos-director
..
bareos-director/unknown 19.2.7-2 amd64
  Backup Archiving Recovery Open Sourced - director daemon

bareos-director-python-plugin/unknown 19.2.7-2 amd64
  Backup Archiving Recovery Open Sourced - director Python plugin

In the meanwhile, I have pursued a different path and compiled bareos from source. After reimplementing a bug fix ( 0001220) that apparently is not included in the source release but only  in a later version and recompiling it, if works.

That's correct. We decided not to build i386 packages for Ubuntu 18.04
anymore. The last Intel CPUs that didn't support x86_64 were End-of-Life
in 2006 and we had the impression that 12 years was enough time to
assume people have finally migrated.

in the sources for 19.2.7 and later:

$ git tag --contains 60e7731
Release/19.2.7
Release/19.2.8

Note that I specifically used the 16.04 repository because it still has 32-bit packages. These are working for me on my 18.04 system.

I was building from bareos_19.2.6.orig.tar.gz which I assumed to be the latest source code distribution. I have checked once more. There is a later one in bz2 format (bareos_19.2.7.orig.tar.bz2) that I overlooked.

Dear Jon,

assuming that the 16.04 repository do not contain newer versions of bareos, I opted for compilation on own. Adding the path to the 16.04 repository of bareos to the configuration of the package system (as you suggested),  I now realize that also packages containing  bareos V19.2.7  are available for cpus  with i386 architecture.
