I get a bareos error on the backup jobs and wonder, if the drive is broken. Has anyone an idea, what I could try?

I get this error in Bareos:

```
bareos-sd JobId 30873: Error: stored/block.cc:1057 Read error on fd=6 at file:blk 0:0 on device "tapedrive-0" (/dev/tape/by-id/scsi-35000e11162fc2001-nst). ERR=Input/output error.
```

I tried using other tapes, but that does not work either. I tried relabeling the tapes but this does not work either and I get an error. Not even manually writing to the tapes with 'mt' works and I get the error

```
/dev/nst0: Input/output error
mt: The tape is write-protected.
```

Drive status on the tape roboter says: Drive Error Code 3
When I start diagnostics on the tape roboter it says on all tests passed and after cleaning the drive it shows no error code, until I try labeling the tapes.

When asking the status with 'mtx' I get "/dev/sch0 is not an sg device, or old sg driver".

So is there anything left that I could try?

- You could try to load a cleaning tape into your drive and see if cleaning helps

- Use the drive vendors' diagnostic program, like HPE Library and Tape Tools (L&TT) or IBM Tape
Diagnostic Tool (ITDT). These tools will probably tell you the details about the error you have.

You need to use the scsi generic (/dev/sgX) of your changer for mtx. This will probably still not
show you

Hi Mario,

Did you ever figure out what caused the problem? I'm getting similar errors.

Is anything showing up in dmesg?

Cheers,

AND what the symbolic link points to

What user are you running as? What is Bareos-fd running as?

mtx doesn't talk to /dev/sch (and never has), find the /dev/sg and talk
to that instead

Many years ago I wrote and published udev tweaks to add the changer and
tape /dev/sg as link in /dev/tape/by-id/ - Check if it appears there

I tried debugging the issue with Tape Diagnostic Tool (ITDT) and it listed additional error information. I don't know anymore what the error was and I don't know how (and if) the error was resolved, because I am not at the company anymore.

But thanks for the help. And good luck to others with this issue.
