Dear friends
I write today to share sad news: I plan to retire from Bard as of December, 31, 2020. Many of you are aware that I
have been dealing with a mysterious neurological disorder for the last several years. At the end of December 2019, I gave up teaching, but I hoped that I could continue my responsibilities in the chaplaincy, but I simply do not have the strength to continue.
I want you to know what a pleasure and privilege it has been to be a part of Bard's Jewish community the last twelve years. The relationships I have forged have been some of the most
important in my life. Whether cooking and baking on Thursday nights with a small but dedicated group of students or sharing Shabbat dinner while you fed Zeke (and before him, Ivory) massive quantities of challah, or sending an email looking for a dogsitter and being inundated with responses in moments, I have loved every minute of it. I feel honored by the trust you have put in me and the extent to which you have allowed me to share your lives at Bard.
Even now, the College is conducting a search for my successor. It is too early to know who that person will be (Heavans! They might not even have a dog!), but I am confident that the search committee will choose someone worthy of your love and respect.
Rachel and Zeke and I are not going anywhere, so you may see us around town in the post-Covid era. Meanwhile, we still have Shabbat every Friday at 5 p.m., for the time being in the Ludlow tent, and perhaps, as it gets colder, at some as of yet undisclosed indoor location.
My most fervent hope is that the Jewish community that we have built together will flourish and grow even stronger and warmer in the years to come!
L' shalom,
David
